Classification and Control of Information 2
Industry Guidelines | ISGOTT
› International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers and
Terminals, 5th Edition. Combines;
› ‘Tanker Safety Guide (Petroleum)’ published by
International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)
› ‘International Oil Tanker and Terminal Safety
Guide’ published by Oil Companies International
Marine Forum (OCIMF)
› Section 11.8 – Ship to Ship Transfers
› Refers to ICS/OCIMF Ship to Ship Transfer Guide
› ‘... an insulating flange or a single non-conducting
length of hose should be used in the hose string.’
› Section 18.2 – Cargo Hoses
› See Operational Considerations

Classification and Control of Information 3
Industry Guidelines | OCIMF STS Transfer Guide
› Ship to Ship Transfer Guide for Petroleum, Chemicals
and Liquefied Gases, 1st Edition
› CDI, ICS, OCIMF, SIGTTO organisations
› Section 9.2 Cargo Transfer Hoses
› Check suitable for use prior to transfer operations
› No specific international standard for STS hoses
› Suitable hose standards include EN 1765 for oil
service
› If an insulation flange is in place, the hose string
should comprise electrically continuous hoses
› If an insulation flange is not used, a single length
of electrically discontinuous hose should be
installed within the string
› Hoses should have pressure ratings appropriate
for their intended service

Classification and Control of Information 4
STS Operations | Hose Length

› Hose lengths to be considered on a case by case basis, including the following;

› Minimum allowable bend radius
› Horizontal distance between the vessels
› Difference in fore and aft alignment
› Vertical and horizontal vessel movement
› Relative change in manifold heights between the vessels
› Minimisation of number of hoses used in the hose string
› Hose handling requirements and any limitations of the ship’s equipment
› Any other special characteristics related to the vessels

Classification and Control of Information 5
STS Operations | Handling, Lifting & Suspending

› Guidance from ISGOTT Sections 18.2.6 /18.2.11 on Hose Maintenance and

Handling, Lifting and Suspending Hoses;
› Hoses handled with care and not dragged over a surface
› Not rolled in a manner which twists the body of the hose
› Not come into contact with a hot surface such as a steam pipe
› Protection should be provided at any point where chafing or rubbing can occur
› Lifting bridles or saddles should be provided
› Use of steel wires in direct contact not permitted
› Hoses should not be lifted at a single point with ends hanging down and
supported so hose MBR not exceeded
› Support for the hose when connected to the manifold should be provided
› Hose string(s) should be adjusted with changes to draft during operations to
avoid undue strain on manifolds and hose MBR not exceeded
