III. REASON FOR FORMING THE ENTERPRISE

Krie Lopez founded Messy Bessy in 2007 with the initial aim to empower sexually abused girls by
providing them with an education. Krie was inspired to found Messy Bessy after a visit to the Delancy
Street Foundation imparted her with the realization that businesses can be used to empower
marginalized members of society.

The number of underprivileged youth in Manila, particularly girls vulnerable to sex trafficking, is
escalating. Krie identified the integral role the lack of education plays in keeping them trapped in the
poverty cycle. In response, she developed Messy Bessy to cater to the vital need for education for all
marginalized youth. On the consumer-facing side, Messy Bessy’s products fill the market gap in
affordable environmentally friendly home cleaning and personal care products. 60% of the
Messy Bessy workforce are at-risk youth and they are compensated by Messy Bessy through
individual mentorship, counselling, financial coaching, and a salary which is managed to cover all
tuition and living expenses and grow a savings account.

Messy Bessy started with an in-house high school diploma program, and then expanded to a holistic
approach to more effectively empower the young adults they work with. Today Messy Bessy learners
undergo the HOP programme, which consists of academic education, values education, work skills
training, and work ethics training.

IV. MAJOR ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED BY THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE IN THE PHILIPPINES:

A social enterprise that makes earth-friendly household cleaners through a breakthrough
program that helps improve the lives of at-risk young adults in the community, Messy Bessy will
be facilitating youth camps for kids and teens who are keen on becoming agents of change.

By giving insights on how to live a more socially aware life, the program hopes to encourage
young minds to promote transformative change. For starters, participants will learn about
Messy Bessy's social innovation and get hands-on experience on making the enterprise's
various products.

They will also interact with learner beneficiaries, giving them a better understanding of how a
business can make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Among other things, participants will be given goal setting and problem solving exercises, learn
about basic business planning, team building, and money management, and take sessions on
social issues and the efforts to solve them. At the end of the program, they would have
developed the basic idea for their own social enterprise and social innovation.

V. RECOMMEND ACTIONS TO IMRPOVE OPERATION OF THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE (AT
LEAST 2):

RECOMMENDATION 1:

One of the recommendations that I can give is to promote their enterprise through various
mediums that are available. They can promote their business in Social Media, through
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter etc. They can also widen the reach of their products through
Shopee, Lazada and any online shopping outlets that provides an easy access and convenience
to the consumers.

RECOMMENDATION 2:

They can also expand their business by simply trying out to join any Bazars, Sunday Markets and
community event for the consumers to explore their products and hear their advocacy.
