While we recognize that 2020 has been a difficult year for many of you due to the COVID-19
pandemic, we want you to understand that we are here to help you and your families navigate
through these difficult times. The most important thing that I can do as your landlord is provide
safe and adequate housing for you and all of your neighbors. However, the negative economic
impact created by this pandemic has made that effort increasingly difficult.
I am writing to you to notify you about various programs that can help you financially and allow
you to meet your rental obligations. These programs can be a tremendous help to you and your
families and I would hate to see these opportunities go to waste. The latest federal stimulus
package passed before the holidays will soon provide additional rental assistance to New York.
Until then, it is important that you consider the existing programs available for you:
The COVID Rent Relief Program
Administered by the State, $100 million of federal funding was allocated last spring to provide
up to four months of rental assistance for low-income tenants throughout New York State.
Approximately $60 million is still available and tenants who meet certain eligibility criteria can
apply up until February 1, 2021. The eligibility criteria are as follows:
1. Must be a renter and have a primary residence in New York State;
2. Applicants must have lost income during the period of April 1, 2020 to July 31,
2020;
3. Before March 7, 2020, household income must have been at or below 80% of the
Area Median Income, adjusted for household size; and
4. Households must be “rent burdened” during the months they are applying for
assistance between April 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020.
