题 目 ： Some people think music serve many different purpose in society while
others think it is only a form of entertainment. Discuss both views and give your own
opinion.

The issue of whether music is merely a method for listeners to gain relax and
pleasant feelings has sparked off an intense debate. In this essay, I aim at discussing
both sides of the debate and put up my own opinion.

There is no denying that music is always regarded as a stress reliever for people.
Usually, they listen to their favorable kinds of music, such as pop music, folk songs,
classical music and so forth when they go back home after busy work to gain a
pleasant feeling. Meanwhile, playing musical instruments to friends and families or
dancing with music in parties are also very common group leisure activities, which
seem to be more effective to strengthen family bonds and friendship compared to
other entertainment activities like watching TV and playing computer games.

However, the role of music is not confined to just providing entertainment for
people. That is because music as a universal language has an essential role to play in
cultural communication. This means people from cultural backgrounds are capable of
exchanging feelings and thoughts through music. In addition, from an economic
perspective, music is vitally important in bringing high incomes in world music
industry, which has become a multimillion dollar business, including album sales,
concert tours and digital downloads. Also, it is manifest that music industry also
creates abundant job opportunities; therefore, the power of music is shown in its

In conclusion, from my own perspective, music indeed plays a key role in people’s
entertainment. Nevertheless, in the same time, its function served in cultural
exchange and economic development cannot be ignored as well.
