LEARNING BASED ON CHALLENGES

1. Theme/unit:

Workshop 3: design and implementation of an automatic Board for the

control of electric pumps in alternately

2. Contents

 Characteristics of a power Board for the control of pumps.

 Components of the Board electric.

 Sizing of conductors and components electric.

 Development of electrical diagrams of power and control for engines.

 Installation of an electrical circuit for alternating control of pumps.

3. Competencies

 Design electrical circuits by applying logical wired.

 Interpret electrical connection of force diagrams and control.
 Describe the operation and sequence of a set of pumping.
 Work in team.

4. PROBLEM

Azul Berries S.A.A. is a company dedicated to the production of fresh and

frozen blueberries. It is located in the province of Chao, in the region La
Libertad. The production of the 2017-2018 season and the production
projection for the 2019 season make the company take the decision to
expand its cultivation hectares by 10%. The main element of the success of
the harvest depends on the water, because the schedules and volume of
irrigation in the day must be fulfilled. The supply of water resources is done
through the mother channels of the Chavimochic project, which is stored in
reservoirs depending on the area of the crop. For this enlargement, it is
necessary to send water from the main reservoir (40 000 m3) of sector 4 to
the Reservoir 11 (2000 m3) of the enlargement, using 3 installed pumps
complying with the following operating principle:

Cycle 1: two pumps in parallel are activated to fill the reservoir 11 from the
minimum level to a 70% of your capacity. To the get to that level, be stop
the pump 2; the 1 pump stops upon reaching the level max.

Cycle 2: two pumps in parallel are activated to fill the reservoir 11 from the
minimum level to a 70% of your capacity. To get to that level, be stop the
pump 1; the 2 pump stops upon reaching the level max.

In a next work cycle, cycles 1 and 2 on alternate. 3 pump is a pump that

comes into operation to produce a failure or maintenance of one of the
main pumps of the system, this pump should meet the same sequence as
the bomb that failed.

Low these parameters of the system, is request make a proposed technical

for the installation of the Board electric pumps in the CCM from the
farm. The distance from the CCM to the pump room is 500 meters.

5. IDEA

 Design and sizing of the pump control Panel.

 Establish the characteristics and capacity of the elements that conform the
panels.
 Make the power and control wiring diagram for pump ignition as required
 Perform the installation and testing of the circuit on an electrical panel.

6. QUESTIONS

 What is the reason why an alternating pump start is made in a water pumping
system? What benefits and/or limitations are obtained by implementing it?

- To extend the service life of the pumping system, increase reliability and
reduce maintenance costs.
- Benefits: Extends the life of motors and mechanical components, avoids
mechanical stress in a single electric pump, increases reliability, fewer stops
and maintenance time.

 What are the main failure modes of a water pump? How can you detect them
before a failure stops the bomb? Make a chart describe these failure modes.

- Attached the Excel file.

 What type of connection would you recommend for starting a water pump?
What is the livelihood of that choice?

- By soft Starter. Because it consumes less current at the start than a direct
start, and is comfortable to compare the start by speed variator.

7. SOLUTION

 Elaborate the calculation and sizing of the components of the electrical

installation required, taking into account safety factors.
- Cable calculation and voltage drop are attached in the Excel file.

 Prepare the Force and control diagrams for starting the pumps according
to the operating principle described.
8. IMPLEMENTATION

It will be run at TECSUP Electrical Workshop (G6). You will work in a

team, designating a team leader. Safety rules must be met during
installation and testing of the energized circuit.
