PLAGIARISM?

• To be an effective reader, you need to be a good record keeper.


• Find systemic ways to managing information: - maintain a working bibliography
- keep track of source materials
- take notes without plagiarizing
MAINTAIN A WORKING BIBLIOGRAPHY

• A bibliography is when you compile your list of resources at the end of your paper.
• There are different types: MLA style, APA style, and CMS style
• Some information might not be available for your bibliography, but try to find it by
looking deep into the site.You need: authors name, the date of publication, and the
name of any sponsoring organization.
• Annotate your bibliography.

KEEP TRACK OF SOURCE MATERIALS

• * Keep a copy of each source


• Use photocopies, printouts, and electronic files, don't rely on memory or
written notes
• IMPORTANT : KEEP PRINT OR ELECTRONIC COPIES OF WEB SOURCES.
It may change or inaccessible over time.
AVOID PLAGIARISM

• Take down ideas, while you take notes


• Plagiarism is a serious academic offense.
• How to prevent: - try not to look at the direct source while taking notes.
(Quoting is exceptional)
- when quoting, make sure to write the authors work word
by word with quotations around it.
• Take notes by summarizing, paraphrasing an quoting; include exact references
THE APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION
STYLE

• Common styles: Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological


Association (APA), or Chicago Manual of Style (CMS)
• Reasons for citing: - to acknowledge the work of others
- to add creditability to your work
- to engage in a scholarly conversation
• Citing allows your readers to find more information on the topic you are
writing about.
