Project Report-Reverse Vending Machines/Smart Bins(Amritsar)

Project Summary
The project involves collection of plastic PET bottles and aluminium cans via machines called reverse vending machines
(RVM’s).These machines accept empty plastic PET bottles and reward the users with coupons/cashback/e-money for helping in
saving the environment. The intent is to change the habits of people towards waste disposal. These machines make the waste
collection supply chain process more efficient and at the same time making recycling fun for individuals. These are intelligent
waste collection solutions as
1. The machines have waste compacting and segregation at source.
2. The machines have wireless bin full sensor, senses bin fill level and sends real time data to centrally controlled server.
3. The data can be monitored centrally and collection routes can be optimized.
4. Optimized collection and supply helps in resource and time saving.
5. The waste is disposed properly and does not end in landfills and water bodies.

Addressable Problem (Problem being solved)

India recycles about 65% of PET waste, the rest is burnt, ends up in landfills or waterbodies. The other problems with current
collection process are
1. An inefficient cycle
2. Multiple middle men
3. Child Labour
4. Resource wastage
5. Time wastage
6. Carbon foot-print

Project/Solution (Implementation)
The project involved installation of 10 Reverse Vending Machines/Smart Bins in Golden Temple outer corridor in Amritsar,
Punjab. The users of the machine were given attractive rewards in the form of coupons from different venders and cashback in
their e-wallets. This will also create a habit in them to properly dispose of waste and understand their responsibilities towards
the environment.
The waste from these machines is collected and given to a recycler for recycling and converting it into raw materials like
polyester yarn. This yarn is further used to make t-shirts, caps, bed sheets, bags etc.

The Impact
The impact of this project can be summarized as follows:
1. 10 Reverse Vending Machines/Smart Bins installed.
2. Average of 150 users per day per machine.
3. No. of days since commencement- 125 days
4. 3,750 kg of PET and aluminium cans disposed
5. Citizen made aware of their responsibility.
6. Recycling made easy, fun and rewarding.
7. Recycling made efficient and resource saving.
8. Less Carbon foot-print.
