An Assignment on Power Devices Switching
Fall 2020
1. A chopper circuit supplying a highly inductive load and having an IGBT (BSM200GA120D) as a
switch, has the following parameters: Io=50A (use a current source of 50A to represent the RL load),
Vd=500V, fs=25kHz, Ls=700nH and ton=25us. Assume linear voltage and current falls and rises
during switching to:
i) calculate the conduction and the switching power losses if tc(on) =100ns, tc(off)=150ns,
assuming that Von=2.5V using the appropriate derived formulas
ii) In ORCAD/PSPICE, simulate a chopper circuit implementing an IGBT (BSM200GA120D) as a
switch to supply a highly inductive load which has the following parameters: Io=50A, Vd=500V,
fs=25kHz, Ls=700nH and ton=25us. In the results, show the turn-on and turn-off transitions
(magnified) for the voltage, current and power losses in the IGBT (Plot all traces in one figure
with 3 axes). One figure for the magnified turn-on transition and the other is for turn-off
transition.
iii) calculate the average power losses in the IGBT by ORCAD.
2. If the chopper circuit is now supplying a purely resistive load of 10 Ohms (no parallel diode) and
implementing the IGBT model. Assume linear voltage and current falls and rises during switching to:
a) calculate the conduction and the switching power losses if Vd=500V, fs=25kHz, ton=25us, tc(on)
=100ns, tc(off)=150ns, Ls=700nH and Von=2.5V using the appropriate derived formulas
b) simulate the circuit in part 2) using ORCAD/PSPICE and plot the magnified turn-on and turn-off
transitions of the voltage, current and power loss in the IGBT (Plot all traces in one figure with 3
axes). One figure for the magnified turn on transition and the other is for turn-off transition.
c) calculate the average power losses in the IGBT
Notes: 1) Use a gate resistor for the IGBT equal to the sum of the last two digits (from right) from
your Student ID. If the sum is less than 6 , use 6 Ohms.
2) The assignment is due to on 20/10/2020 (Tuesday) before 11:00PM. Send the file/report as an

attachment to a message with a clear title (Assignment # 1 Student Name and ID).
