Neural Network Approach to Feature-based Process Planning

AMAITIK, S.M.

Abstract

The goal of this paper is to apply a neural network approach to computer-aided process planning
that can generate the needed process plan based on design data. To achieve this goal, a
multilayer neural network model has been developed to automatically generate process plan for
feature based models. Features geometrical and technological attributes are presented to the
neural network as input data. The network classifies the required process plan data for each
feature into four groups namely; starting operations, roughing operations, semi-finishing
operations, and finishing operations. A back-propagation algorithm was used in the training of
the neural network with several training patterns. The applicability of the proposed neural
network approach was verified through several example parts. The results obtained confirm the
effectiveness of the neural network approach in CAPP systems.
