DESERTIFICATION
Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas.

Caused primarily by human activities and climate variations.
It occurs because dry land ecosystems , which cover one third of the world’s land area, are
extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use.

Environmental problem that the MEA
addresses
Poverty, political instability, deforestation, over gazing and bad irrigation practices can all
undermine the productivity of the land.

Over 250 million people are directly affected by desertification and about one billion people in
over one hundred countries are at risk.

Implementation challenges
Lack of sufficient funding from the donor community , in part because the problem of
desertification in not perceived as a global concern.
