Introduction

The Middle Year Programme (MYP) personal project allows students to practice
and strengthen their ATL skills, demonstrate their ability, attitudes and knowledge
that needed to complete the project. The MYP personal project must be completed
by all Year 5 MYP student over an extended amount of time. The project will test me
to investigating, planning, taking action, and reflect on my abilities. The personal
project is a golden opportunity for me to show and demonstrate my ability to make
the project a success.

The Goal

The goal for my project is to promote Islamic Geometric Pattern to the community
especially among teenagers. I will achieved the goal by making a video about the
Islamic Geometry Pattern and publish it through Instagram. I choose to publish it in
this platform because most of the teenagers nowadays use Instagram in their daily
life. Thus it will make the video reach them easier in order to attract and make them
aware of the glorious of the Islamic civilization achievement in art and appreciate it. I
also hope they will be interested to explore more about interior design field or at least
they can try to apply to use Islamic Geometric Pattern in their assessment involving
art at the end of the video. To make the video interesting, I will add my own design in
the video by using 3 other Islamic Geometric Pattern that already existed and will
draw by myself as well to make them as a reference as my unique feature in the
video. I want to show them it easy to draw yet the result is magnificent thus indirectly
make the goal can be achieve more easier

Global Context

My global context for the project is personal and cultural expression. I choose
this global context because I personally must delve into Islamic art culture and
history and must understand it completely in order to achieve my objective. I also
choose this global context because it can explain that I am being creative and
artistry. I must express feeling and art value of the Islamic Geometry Pattern by
create my own design by using 3 other Islamic Geometry Pattern as a reference. By
designing my own design, it will make me think more creative and open minded in
order to make a proper design because there are a lot of Islamic Geometry Pattern
that already existed and can be make as a reference. This artistry design can help
me to achieve my goal which is to make the community especially teenagers aware
and appreciate their artistry value. I also must edit the video in a creative.

Prior Learning

I had some prior learning according to the project which is mathematic, art, and
history. The first one is mathematic. During form 2, I was revealed by the basic of
geometry. I learn how to draw a polygon like heptagon, pentagon, and hexagon by
using a protector, ruler and a pair of compasses during that time. I also learn how to
determine and calculate their interior and outer angle and how to draw them
accurately.

Besides that, I also learned art either in the classroom or outside the classroom.
At the school, which is during 2017, we were learning about colour topic. The thing
that we learned were like colour wheel, colour tone and monochromatic. For me,
colour tone and monochromatic is really important features in colouring. The value of
light rays of a colour which allows a colour to have various tone can make a drawing
more beautiful and pleasant to see. Therefore, this criteria is really important for my
project to make my design more pretty. For outside the classroom, I learned how to
shade, draw, a correct ways in colouring and some tips to colour via google and
youtube,

Last but not least is history. At form 1, I was exposed by the Islam civilization and
its contribution. I came across a subtopic called Islam civilization contribute in
architecture. One of the contribute is the construction of tower, mihrab and mimbar, a
unique and an aesthetic design which is like calligraphy motif, carved arabes and
geometry design. I learned that it have an aesthetic value, used as a decoration on
Islam architecture and as an interior design in a mosque.

Research Skill

For my project, I first researched about the definition of the polygon as the basic
for constucting the Islamic Geometric Pattern was the mix of polygon to make a new
design. I used Super Skill Ulangkaji PT3 Matematik to get the information I want. I
found that a polygon is a closed shape in a plane that has 3 or more straight side. I
also got to know about the criteria for a regular polygon which are all sides are at
equal length and all the interior angle are at equal size. Besides that, I was given
opportunity to learn how to construct the regular polygon by using a pair of
compasses and a ruler. After that, I continue my research using a book named
Pemikiran Seni Bina Islam Moden di Dunia dan Malaysia. It state that the geometric
shape usually used at the basic shape of the building, decoration or at an opening
like door or window. I too studied that it was used to replace the use of animal and
human decoration that are forbidden in Islam. Next, I use Pendidikan Seni Visual
Tingkatan 1 KSSM to learn about colour choice. I learned about the colour tone
which resulted the existence of various tone. Futhermore, I learned about
monochromatic, colour chrome, hot colour and cool colour.

After that, I use internet as my source for my project. I watched a video on

Youtube titled The Complex Geometry of Islamic Design-Eric Broug. I get to know
that the geometry pattern was widely used in the beginning of the 8 th century CE. It
also said that to construct it, you just need a compasses and a ruler. I also use
Wikipedia title Islamic Geometry Pattern to get information. One of its state is that
the geometric design are often built on combination of repeated squares and circles,
which may be overlapped and interlaced.

Additionally, I also have a source people to get information concerning the

project. Her name is Normizah binti Masri and works as an interior designer .One of
the interior design she was in charge was interior design of Majid Al-Badr, Pulau
Pangkor,Perak. I asked her if it acceptable for me to create my own design and
some aspect that need to be taken seriously. She said that I can create it and stated
that the most important thing in geometry design is it must symmetry and must make
sure the design does not have cross shape in it

Not forgot to mention, I also was given an opportunity to visit research area. I
went to Masjid Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah to see by myself the usage of geometry
pattern on the architectures of the mosque. I went there to get some inspiration to
construct my own design for my video use.

Last but not least, I use a journal titled Evolution of Islamic Geometrical Pattern
as a source. Through this journal, I found a lot of new information about the evolution
and development of geometry pattern that were used in architecture of the mosque
around the world. One of the most important information that I got to through this
source is the field of geometry has been develop greatly resulted from the work of
among other like Umar-al-Khayyam, Abu l Wafa al-Buzjani, Abu Mansur al-
Khawarizmi and Ibn al-Haytham.
