Linkages

Linkages

A linkage is a system of connected rods and levers that are used to transmit motion and force.
Linkages
may be used to:

 Change the direction of motion and force

 Change the size of the output motion compared to the size of the input motion
 Create parallel motion
 Change one type of motion into another type of motion.

The linkage above illustrates how the direction of motion and force may be changed.

The diagram above illustrates how a linkage may be used to create a parallel motion.

The diagram above illustrates a pantograph linkage. A pantograph is used to copy and rescale shapes and
drawings.

The lazy tong linkage is used for lifting and reaching. It

is the basic mechanism for car scissor jacks.

The diagram above illustrates how a linkage is used in a crank and slider mechanism
and how rotary motion is converted into reciprocating motion.

Linkages connected to two bell crank levers create a near vertical reciprocating sawing action.

The photograph above shows various linkages and levers in a typical sewing machine. Also visible
in the photograph is a belt and pulley drive, nylon bevel gears, retaining springs and lubricating
grease.

The figure contains Following linkages Levers, and Gears.

 Nylon Bevel gears.

The first element along the shaft is a simple belt that turns a lower drive shaft.
The end of the lower drive shaft is connected to a set of bevel gears that
rotates the shuttle assembly. Since both are connected to the same drive
shaft, the shuttle assembly and the needle assembly always move in union.

The lower drive shaft also moves linkages that operate the feed

dog mechanism. One linkage slides the feed dog forward and backward with
each cycle. At the same time, another linkage moves the feed dog up and down.

The two linkages are synchronized so that the feed dog presses up against the
fabric, shifts it forward, and then moves down to release the fabric. The feed
dog then shifts backward before pressing up against the fabric again to repeat
the cycle.
