CENTRE OF GRAVITY AND

CENTROID
Unit 2
CONCEPT OF CENTRE OF GRAVITY AND
CENTROID
• We already know that attraction of earth could be
represented by a single force W, towards the centre of
earth. The force W, called the weight of the body, is to
be applied at centre of gravity of the body.
• Thus centre of gravity is that point through which the
body weight acts.
• The C.G. of the body does not change for any position
of the body-
• Centroid of plane lamina is the point through which the
total area may be considered concentrated.
• The point centroid may lie in or outside the area.
Difference Between Centre of Gravity and Centroid

Centre of Gravity Centroid

1. Centre of gravity of a rigid body is 1. Centroid of a lamina is defined as the point

metrical centre of the area or lines.
2.Centroid is related to two dimensional
2. C.G. is related to three dimensional

NUMERICAL PROBLEMS
Determine the centroid of a 100 mm x 150 mm x
30 mm T-section.
NUMERICAL PROBLEMS
• As the section is symmetrical about YY-axis,
bisecting the web, therefore centroid will lie
• on this axis, split up the section into two
rectangles ABCH and GDEF as shown in Figure
• we have to determine only y.
NUMERICAL PROBLEMS
• Let bottom horizontal line MN is reference
axis and ABCH is part 1, and EFGD is part 2
NUMERICAL PROBLEMS
• a1 = 100 x 30 =3000 mm2

• y1= 150-(30/2) =135 mm2

• a2 = 120 x 30 = 3600 mm2

• y2 = 120/2 = 60 mm
