How to file ITR Online

The process to electronically file Income Tax Returns (ITR) by using the internet is
called E-filing. The process to e-file ITR is quick, easy, and can be completed from the
comfort of an individual’s home or office. E-filing ITR can also help in saving money as
you would not have to hire an individual to file ITR.

A step by step guide on how to log in or register on the e-filing


portal
 Step 1: Visit the e-filing website https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

Step 2: Register or Login to e-file your returns 


Step 3: Select the User Type

In order to register yourself with the Income Tax Department, you will have to
choose your ‘User Type’ first. The options available to you include Individual,
Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), Other than Individual/HUF, External Agency,
Chartered Accountants, Tax Dedcutor and Collector, and Third-Party Software
Utility Developer.
Next, you will have to enter your current address and your permanent address
before entering the Captcha code and hitting ‘Submit’
 
Step 4: Basic details must be filled up 

You will then have to fill in your personal information such as your name, your
PAN and your date of birth. You can then use PAN as your user ID whenever
you log in to the e-filing portal. You will also have to enter your contact details
such as your mobile number and email ID.
 
Step 5: Verification of PAN
Your PAN will then be verified by the system and your transaction ID as well as
contact details will be displayed on the screen.
Step 6: Activation of Account
Lastly, you will have to activate your Income Tax Department account through
the link sent to your email ID

Follow the steps mentioned below to e-file your income tax returns using the income tax
e-filing portal:
 Step 1: Calculate your income tax liability as per the provisions of the income tax laws.
 Step 2: Use your Form 26AS to summarise your TDS payment for all the 4 quarters of
the assessment year.
 Step 3: On the basis of the definition provided by the Income Tax Department (ITD) for
each ITR form, determine the category that you fall under and choose an ITR form
accordingly.
 Step 4: Visit the official e-filing website at https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
 Step 5: Click on the ‘IT Return Preparation Software’ option under the ‘Download’
section on the home page.
 Step 6: Download the offline utility after choosing the assessment year. You can
download either the Java utility file or the MS-Excel file.
 Step 7: Once you have downloaded the offline utility file, fill up the fields with the
relevant information of your income, tax payable, and receivable refunds.
 Step 8: After filling up the form, click on the ‘Validate’ button on the form itself to make
sure that all the necessary fields have been filled up.
 Step 9: After the validation, click on the ‘Generate XML’ button. This will convert your file
in to an XML file.
 Step 10: Log in to your income tax e-filing portal once again using your credentials.
 Step 11: Navigate to the ‘Income Tax Return’ option under the ‘e-file’ option from the
main menu.
 Step 12: Fill up the fields with the relevant information such as your PAN, Assessment
Year, ITR Form Number, and Submission Mode. Use the drop-down menu to select
‘Upload XML’ under the ‘Submission Mode’ field.
 Step 13: Click on the ‘Continue’ button and upload the XML file which you have saved in
your computer.
 Step 14: Click on the ‘Submit’ button and select a mode of verification from the list –
Electronic Verification Code (EVC), Aadhaar OTP, and so on.
A step by step guide on how to file ITR offline – for Super
Senior Citizens
Super senior citizens (individuals who are 80 years old and above) are given the option
to file ITR offline during the financial year. Another instance where the ITR can be filed
offline is if an individual or HUF has an income of less than Rs.5 lakh and are not
entitled to receive a refund.
The step-by-step procedure to file returns offline is mentioned below:
1. Individuals must request for a Form 16.
2. Next, you will need to submit the ITR returns in the paper form at the Income Tax
Department.
3. Once the form has been submitted, you will receive an acknowledgement slip from the
Income Tax Department.
