Back paper Examination, SEP 2013
ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY

Time: 3 Hours] [Total Marks: 100

Note : (i) Attempt all questions.
(ii) All Questions carry equal marks.

Q1. Attempt any FOUR: [4 x 5 = 20]

(i) Explain why N2 has greater dissociation energy than N2+ while O2 has lower
dissociation energy than O2+.
(ii) What is aldol condensation? Write the mechanism and products of crossed aldol
condensation involving equimolar amounts of acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde.
(iii) Discuss the mechanism of Hofmann rearrangement (degradation) with suitable
examples.
(iv) Why do nitro compounds have high boiling points in comparison with other
compounds of same molecular mass?
(v) Briefly explain fullerene and its applications?
(vi) Write short notes on following topics:
a. Optical Activity
b. Enantiomers
c. Racemic mixture
d. Diastereomers

Q2. Attempt any FOUR: [4 x 5 = 20]

(i) What is meant by rate of reaction? Discuss the various factors that affect the rate of
reaction.
(ii) Write notes on (a) electrochemical conventions and (b) functions of a salt bridge.
(iii) What is meant by corrosion? Explain the electrochemical theory of corrosion.
(iv) Define buffer solution and solubility product.
(v) With a neat diagram explain the ion-exchange process for the purification of water.
Discuss the merits and demerits of this process.
(vi) An amount of 0.28g CaCO3 was dissolved in dilute HCl, and the solution made up to
1 L with distilled water. For titration, 100 mL of the above solution required 28 mL
of EDTA solution and 100 mL of the water sample required 33 mL of same EDTA
solution. After boiling 100 mL of this water, cooling and filtering, the titration
required 10 mL of EDTA solution. Calculate the temporary and permanent hardness
of water.

c) Polyamides
d) Teflon
(ii)
a) Write the reaction and mechanism of phenol-formaldehyde resin formation.
b) Explain the importance of Ziegler Natta catalyst in polymerization of ethylene.
(iii)
a) What are biodegradable polymers? Give examples of two natural and two
synthetic biodegradable polymers?
b) Define refractories and what are the criteria of a good refractory?

Q4. Attempt any TWO: [2 x 10 = 20]

c) Flash Point
d) Fire point
e) Cloud and Pour Point

(iii)
a) How is the calorific value of a fuel determined by bomb calorimeter? Explain
with the help of a diagram.
b) Explain the use of Boy’s calorimeter for determination of calorific value of
gaseous fuels.
