FIRE SUPPRESSION STANDPIPES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes equipment, devices, and appurtenances for a
complete standpipe system.
B. The system to be provided shall be designed, installed, tested and set to
work in accordance with NFPA 14, NFPA13, NFPA 24 and the requirements
of the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Authority
C. Related Sections include but are not necessarily limited to:
1. Division 00 - Bidding Requirements, Contract Forms, and Conditions of
the Contract.
2. Division 01 - General Requirements.
3. Division 23
4. Division 13 - Special Construction
5. Divisions 26, 27 and 28
1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. Comply with provisions of Division 01.
B. Undertake full hydraulic calculations as required by NFPA14 to verify or add
to any pipe sizes indicated on the drawings, and submit together with shop
drawings of entire system for approval by the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense
Authority and the appointed client’s representative.
1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Fire protection equipment and installation shall be in accordance with
recommendations of Employer's Underwriter and approved by the Local
Authority.
B. Equipment and installation to meet requirements of NFPA No. 14, Standard
for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems.
C. Design and installation to be undertaken by a specialist sprinkler installing
company conversant with NFPA installations and acceptable to the approving
authority

2.2 FIRE DEPARTMENT VALVES
A. Interior Fire Department Valves: Bronze, with local fire department thread,
cap and chain.
B. Roof Fire Department Connection: Pipe mounted cast brass angle inlet,
two-way male outlet fitted with two valves, caps, and chains to match fire
department valves. Locate valves above roof line. Installation shall conform
to Local Authority requirement.
2.3 FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION
A. In accordance with the Local Fire Department requirement.
B. Fire Department Connection: Match connection for sprinkler system. Refer
to Division 21.
C. Piping, Fittings and Valves: Match sprinkler system. Refer to Division 21.

2.4 HOSE STATIONS.


A. Provide Class 3 hose stations within or adjacent to the protected staircases
and / or as indicated on the drawings.
B. Provide 25mm automatic first aid hose reel within hose cabinet complete
with fire extinguishers in locations indicated on the drawings, as required by
NFPA 14 and Abu Dhabi Civil defense Authority

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Install fire department valves at 1524mm above floor.
B. Install Hose cabinets 1200mm above FFL or at a height indicated on the
architects drawings or to the manufactures recommendation.
C. During construction, make 1 standpipe outlet available on each floor without
delay, for fire department use.
D. At hose stations where the static pressure exceeds 689kPa, or the
pressures indicated within NFPA14, provide pressure-reducing valve,
complete with pressure relief valve and piped discharge connected to the
sprinkler test drain stack, to prevent pressure on hose from exceeding
621kPa.
E. Test standpipe system in accordance with NFPA No. 14.
F. Ensure system is thoroughly flushed out of all debris prior to setting to work.

3.2 VALVE TAGS AND CHARTS


A. All valves to be clearly tagged and referenced.
B. Chart to be provided indicating location of all valves and tag references.

3.3 PIPEWORK ID
A. All pipework to be clearly marked and identified stating pipework content
and flow direction.

3.4 TESTING AND COMMISSIONING REQUIREMENTS

A. Install, test and commission all fire protection systems to requirements of


local Fire Authority.

B. Compile a detailed commissioning programme and confirm/agree with the


Engineer.

C. Complete and submit to the Engineer the appropriate health and safety
method statements and risk assessments.

D. Establish a means (such as checklists) of monitoring the progress of the


commissioning.

E. Ensure that all parties involved in the commissioning process have


documentation procedures for dealing with variations to contract. Ensure that
a control mechanism is set up which includes documentary backup of what
has been changed, how and why.

F. Establish a consistent numbering system to identify work items.

G. Ensure the consistent use of mnemonics to identify all BMS components and
devices.

H. Ensure regular database and configuration backups are made throughout all
stages of the commissioning process.

I. Ensure attendance of all appropriate and responsible parties for interface pre-
commissioning tests (interface between BMS and other plant items/systems).

3.5 TEST CERTIFICATES

A. Where testing specific to the project is required, ensure test certificates


include:
i. Project title.
ii. Details and date of test.
iii. Instruments used, serial numbers, calibration dates.
iv. Signature of those witnessing test.
v. Contractor's name.
vi. Specific location of the item in the Works.

3.6 PRODUCT GUARANTEES AND WARRANTIES
A. Product guaranties and warranties provided by manufacturers, shall be valid
or be extended up to the end of the Defects Liability Period.
B. Any product guaranteed or warranted by a manufacturer for a period of time
which extends beyond the end of the Defects Liability Period shall remain
under guarantee or warranty up to the end of the extended period.
C. Copies of all guarantees or warranties include in each Operation and
Maintenance Manual and hand over one additional set on or before Practical
Completion.
