3) A piston cylinder device contains 300 L of water at 150 oC. Now the water is slowly
heated until all the liquid in the tank is completely vaporized. If the mass of water is 2
kg,
4) Define
6) A rigid tank contains 3 kg of refrigerant-134a at 700 kPa and 70 oC. The refrigerant is
now cooled at constant pressure until it temperature reaches 10 oC.
8) With the aid of a P-v diagram, illustrate the net work done during a cycle with
expansion and compression processes.
9) A piston-cylinder device initially contains 0.07 m3 of nitrogen gas at 130 kPa and 120
o
C. The nitrogen is now expanded polytropically to a state of 100 kPa and 100 oC.
Calculate the boundary work done during the process.
10) Refrigerant-134a contained in a piston-cylinder device at 600 kPa and 900 oC at initial
state. Then, the refrigerant-134a undergoes isothermal expansion process until the
pressure is reduced to 300 kPa. The piston is now rest on a stopper and not moving
while a heat transfer takes place until the temperature of refrigerant-134a reaches 28 oC.
Show the processes on a single P-v diagram by labelling state 1,2 and 3.
11) A piston-cylinder contains 0.5 kg of steam, initially at 1 MPa and 500 oC. The steam
undergoes isobaric condition during cooling process until the volume occupied by the
steam is then one-half of its initial volume.
12) During some actual expansion and compression process in piston cylinder device, the
gases have been observed to satisfy the relationship PVn = C, where n and C are
constants. Calculate the work done when a gas expands from 350 kPa and 0.03 m3 to a
final volume of 0.2 m3 for the case of n = 1.5.
13) A spring-loaded piston cylinder device initially contains refrigerant-134a at 400 kPa
and 70% quality with an initial volume of 0.25 m3. Now heat is transferred to the
system until its volume is 0.35 m3 and its pressure is 600 kPa.
