TUTORIAL 5

1) Define a quasi-equilibrium process and explain its importance in engineering.

2) Describe and sketch the diagram of closed, open and isolated.

3) A piston cylinder device contains 300 L of water at 150 oC. Now the water is slowly
heated until all the liquid in the tank is completely vaporized. If the mass of water is 2
kg,

a) Determine the final temperature of water

b) Determine the amount energy transferred to water in unit of kJ

c) Show the process on a P-v diagram

4) Define

a) Heat, and give 3 mechanism of heat transfer.

b) Work, and give 2 examples of work

5) A piston cylinder device containing argon gas undergoes an isothermal process at

200oC from 250 kPa to 40 kPa. During this process, 2500 kJ heat is transferred to the
system. Determine,

a) the amount of work produced in unit of kJ

b) the mass of argon gas

6) A rigid tank contains 3 kg of refrigerant-134a at 700 kPa and 70 oC. The refrigerant is
now cooled at constant pressure until it temperature reaches 10 oC.

a) Calculate the amount of heat loss in unit of kJ.

b) Show the process on a T-v diagram.

7) A piston-cylinder device contains 0.8 kg of steam at 300 oC and 1 MPa. Steam is

cooled at constant pressure until it reaches a temperature at 179.88 oC at which ½ of the
initial mass condenses. Construct and label the process on a T-v diagram.

8) With the aid of a P-v diagram, illustrate the net work done during a cycle with
expansion and compression processes.

9) A piston-cylinder device initially contains 0.07 m3 of nitrogen gas at 130 kPa and 120
o
C. The nitrogen is now expanded polytropically to a state of 100 kPa and 100 oC.
Calculate the boundary work done during the process.

10) Refrigerant-134a contained in a piston-cylinder device at 600 kPa and 900 oC at initial
state. Then, the refrigerant-134a undergoes isothermal expansion process until the
pressure is reduced to 300 kPa. The piston is now rest on a stopper and not moving
while a heat transfer takes place until the temperature of refrigerant-134a reaches 28 oC.
Show the processes on a single P-v diagram by labelling state 1,2 and 3.

11) A piston-cylinder contains 0.5 kg of steam, initially at 1 MPa and 500 oC. The steam
undergoes isobaric condition during cooling process until the volume occupied by the
steam is then one-half of its initial volume.

a) Determine the final temperature

b) Calculate the amount of work produces, in kJ

c) Calculate the amount of heat transfer in kJ.

12) During some actual expansion and compression process in piston cylinder device, the
gases have been observed to satisfy the relationship PVn = C, where n and C are
constants. Calculate the work done when a gas expands from 350 kPa and 0.03 m3 to a
final volume of 0.2 m3 for the case of n = 1.5.

13) A spring-loaded piston cylinder device initially contains refrigerant-134a at 400 kPa
and 70% quality with an initial volume of 0.25 m3. Now heat is transferred to the
system until its volume is 0.35 m3 and its pressure is 600 kPa.

a) Determine the mass of refrigerant-134a.

b) Calculate the volume of refrigerant-134a at the final state (m3/kg)
c) Calculate the work done in unit kJ.
d) Show process on P-v diagram.
