A Brief History on Racism

- Started from the end of the fourteenth century, when the Europeans began to take
people from Africa against their will.
- The slave trade, originally developed because of the growing demand for sugar, which
lasted in Britain for about 150 years. Irish merchants were part of this trade. By the early
eighteenth century, Britain was one of the richest slave trading nations in the world,
with large numbers of slaves being transported from African and Asian colonies to
Europe and America.
Transatlantic Slave Trade
The Triangular Trade Route was a
trading system in the 15th and
16th century. The Triangular
Trade Route included American
colonies, Britain, and Africa. The
Triangular Trade was a system in
which slaves, crops, and
manufactured goods were
commerce between Africa, the
Caribbean, and the American
colonies. The early days of the
American economy was filled
with trade routes stretching
across the Atlantic Ocean.

What is Black
Lives Matter?

● The movement was born in 2013, after the man who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager,
Trayvon Martin, was cleared of his murder. A Californian activist, Alicia Garza, responded to the
jury’s decision on Facebook with a post that ended: “Black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives
matter.” The hashtag was born, and continued to grow in prominence with each new incident and
protest.
● Black Lives Matter now describes itself as a “chapter-based national organization working for the
validity of black life”. It has developed to include the issues of black women and LGBT
communities, undocumented black people and black people with disabilities.

Major Incidents
and Solutions
The Shooting of
On Feb 26, 2012 Trayvon Martin
● a 17-year-old African high school student was shot and killed by George
Zimmerman, a 28 year old mixed hispanic man at Stanford, Florida, United
States.
● Zimmerman was the neighbourhood watch coordinator for a gated
community in which Trayvon Martin's father's fiancée was a resident.
○ He spotted Martin walking about the neighbourhood at around 7pm in
the evening.
○ After notifying the police about Martins suspicious activity, he
approached Martin. The altercation broke out between him and
Zimmerman, which he shot Trayvon to death.
○ Zimmerman was charged with second degree murder, however, on
July 13th, 2013 he was found not guilty.
● caused an outcry from the African American community for action against
anti-black racism

The Shooting of
Michael Brown
On August 9, 2014
● After the death of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old
African American teenager, was shot and killed by Darren Wilson, a 28
year old Caucasian policeman at Ferguson Missouri.
○ After stealing a Swisher box of cigars at a corner convenience
store, Brown and his friend were confronted by Wilson and had
the altercation. They fled but later Wilson pursued until he
caught up to Brown.
○ Brown turned to face Wilson and told him he was unarmed,
Wilson shot him multiple times until he fell down to the ground,
Brown was hit a total of six times from the front, the last was
probably the fatal shot.
● On October 22nd, the grand jury decided not to indict Wilson for his
actions, it was the last straw and then led to a crucial step in the Black
Lives Matter movement which was internationally recognized.
● Over 100,000 people came together for the “Justice for all” rally in
Washington on December 13th , “Millions March” rally in NYC to
protest police brutality against black people.

- New union agreements can protect the rights of officers without

maintaining the dangerous behaviors of bad apples

End For-Profit Policing

● Minority groups ( such as black people ) were the target of fines or

quotas more than the caucasians did.
Solutions

● To end the cycle, we have to end or decrease the evaluation of

police officer’s performances which is based on quotas of how
many fines or tickets they have arrested or issue they have made
● STOP issuing fines which people would pay for a lighter
punishment, because for the poor, money is crucial for their lives
and it could crimple a family living in poverty.

EXPLANATION

The video contains many scenes involving violence. It starts

off with Gambino dancing through a warehouse, interacting
with a series of chaotic scenes. Gambino's dancing is
contrasted against moments of violence. In this scene,
Gambino shoots a man in the back of the head with a
handgun, while assuming a comical stance similar to a Jim
Crow caricature.
SYMBOLS FURTHER EXPLAINED

Following the first shooting scene,

at this point the video, Childish
Gambino uses an automatic
weapon to gun down a church
choir, which viewers have
interpreted as a reference to the
2015 Charleston church shooting.

In both instances, a child appears from off-screen holding a red

cloth, on which Gambino gently lays the weapon used, while the
bodies are simply dragged away, which viewers have interpreted
"as a reference to Americans' willingness to protect gun rights over
people".
Throughout the video, old vehicles are
featured, many of them with their hazard
lights flashing and the driver's side door
slightly opened, which has been
interpreted as representing fatal police
shootings during traffic stops, while others
REPRESENTATION

have interpreted that the older model cars

as representing the lack of upward
mobility of African Americans.

In the last scene, the video ends with

Childish Gambino in a darkened portion of
the warehouse, fearfully running towards
the camera while being chased by several
white people.
