Female Loneliness
The movie shows female loneliness through the lens of Director Alfonso Cuarón.

Cleo - A hardworking housemaid, she is doing her job well from cleaning house, serving foods,
and taking care of kids. But, she is suffering from her love life, Cleo’s boyfriend abandoned her
when she told him that she is pregnant. She also afraid that she would be fired from her job
because she is pregnant. Then, her baby is revealed to be a stillbirth. Her heart is broken from
the man she is love and losing her baby.

Sofia - The Cleo’s employer. The housewife and the mother of four children, who is taking
care of her kids alone while her husband is having an affair with another woman. Sofia is left
with having to financially support her children on her own, she has to get back to work again
after her husband has left.

Cinema Scene
- Use long take with wide angle camera that shot from the back
- Shot from the back showing the whole honeymoon section row in which the men are
supposed to be sitting with women. However, Fermin left Cleo alone in the cinema leaving
her quite isolated. Even when she walked out of the cinema and sitting in front where so
many people walk around. While she is sitting in front, the camera work introduces a
medium shot where the focus is on Cleo, but the voices from the people can still be heard
from every direction. Isolation at it’s best. Fermin never comes back return to her, or at
least in a good manner. This scene is the embodiment of Cleo’s pain and thanks to Alfonso
Cuaron. His lengthy camera shots and Aparicio’s solemn performance guide the audience
to internalize a portion of Cleo’s pain within themselves. (Quijano, 2019).
When Cleo went to Fermin’s village Scene
When Cleo went to Fermin’s village Scene
- Cleo went to see his boyfriend, Fermin, at his village to talk about their baby. However,
he still refuse to the baby and also Cleo.
- In this scene, the loneliness feeling of Cleo can be clearly seen because she was pregnant
and her boyfriend still refused to take care of her and the baby. When she return home,
she just keep doing the house chore and act like nothing happened because she can’t
doing anything.
- Moreover, the DP present the loneliness feeling of Cleo by showing that Cleo are the one
who left out in the frame while other people are walking away from her.

- Long take technique
- The director wants make this scene emotional, so the audiences can understand
the cleo feelings by putting the to camera to follow the main character “cleo” from
the beginning that the cleo arrived to hospital at the ground floor to operating
room without cutting.
- After that cleo pass through the chaotic situation, she have given the birth of her baby.
There is no response from her child. Cleo can hold the baby for a few second before the
doctors were taking the baby away from Cleo. This depression scene shows the
loneliness and hopeless of main character. This scene makes all characters are
speechless, especially Cleo. she did not have anyone left both of her husband and child.
