The allowable bearing capacity was calculated on the basis of the following data

Estimate size of square footing = 1.5m to 3.5m

Depth of footing = 2.5 m
Bulk unit weight of soil = 17.0 kN/m3
mv = 0.2 m2/MN
c= 33 kN/m2
f'= 330
Water is at great depth
Maximum settlement was limited to 25mm.
Using the Skempton & Bjerum method of settlement calculation, the gross allowable bearing capacity is
estimated to be 250 kN/m2. The calculated factor of safety is 2.5.

On the basis of the above information, it is recommended that foundations to be placed at a depth of at
least 2m below present ground level. Because of the heterogneneity of the subsoil, the estimate of
allowable bearing capacity will be carried out for the worst case conditions. Therefore, the horizons of
less weathered rock in the soil will increase the stiffness of the soil underlying the foundations and will
contribute towards a reduction in the settlement of the foundations.
