Lesson 4 – Music of Korea


WEEK 4 

Period 1 - Bilingual/International

(W/I) Words in Korean Language (10 minutes) 

The teacher will ask the Korean students to stand in front and teach their classmates some Korean words. 

Each one of them will  pick a word, show it to their classmates, and tell its equivalent in Korea.

Members of the class from other countries may from time to time be also asked how to say the same word in
their language, e.g., in Vietnamese. 

(G) Reporting on Korean Musical Culture 

The group assigned to report on Korean Musical Culture will be called in front to give their report, focusing on
the following subtopics
1. Classification of Korean Traditional Music - Jeongak and Mingak (Sogak) 
2. Classificaion of Korean Musical Instruments 
a. Aerophones - P'iri and Chottdae
b. Chordophones - Kayagum and Heagum 
c. Idiophones - Kwenggwari and Ching
d. Membranophones - Changgo and Yanggo 

(G/W) Song Study: Arirang

The assigned group will then teach their classmates the song "Arirang" or another short folk song from Korea.

The reporting group may use video clips, or audio files to facilitate the teaching of the song. 

Period 2 - International 

(W/I) Class Review (20 minutes)

The teacher will flash on the screen important things to remember on the Musical Cultures that have been
covered so far: 
Chinese Music
Japanese Music, and 
Korean Music

(W) Unit Quiz  (20 minutes) 

The class will be given 20 minutes to finish answering their Unit Quiz. 

After everybody has submitted the papers, the class will review the questions and the teacher will give correct
answer for each question so the students may know if they got the correct answer or not. 
Core Tactic - Reporting
This tactic gives the students the opportunity to talk about their own culture and their Music. It is also a chance
for them to experience how it is to teach their classmates. This tactic presupposes that the groups have done
their research well and prepared their materials that are relevant and at the same time relevant to their topic.
