Practical: Calibration of analytical balance

Roll No: 13, 14, 16, 17

Q1. Define analytical balance.

Ans. An analytical balance is used is used to measure mass to a
very high degree of precision and accuracy.

Q2. What do you mean by calibration of analytical balance?

Ans. It is the process of evaluating and adjusting the precision
and accuracy of analytical balance.

Q3. What are the steps in calibrating analytical balance?

Ans.
1. Clean the pan.
2. Tare the balance.
3. Place the weight from the box.
4. Close the lid of the analytical balance.
5. Wait a little and then note the reading shown on the digital
display.
6. Take three readings and then perform calculations.
Q4.What is the importance of calibration in laboratory
equipment like the analytical balance?

Ans. For an analytical balance to give an accurate reading,

the instrument must be calibrated. Calibration is important
because it defines the accuracy and quality of the measurements
that are recorded by the balance.

Q5. What are the parts of analytical balance?

Ans.
Analytical Balance Parts and Function:
 The Beam. This is generally made of brass or aluminium,
and varies in shape and length
 The Pans
 The Standard, the Beam, and Pan Arrestments
 The Case

Q6. Why is it important to close the doors on an analytical

balance before reading the mass?

Ans. Close the balance door, while weighing an object, in order

to prevent air currents from disturbing the reading.
Q7. How do you take care of analytical balance?

Ans:
Cleaning - Daily or as required:
1. Carefully remove the balance pan, clean and replace it.
2. Mop up any spilt liquids and brush any spilt chemicals
from the weighing chamber.
3. Remove dust from the exterior of the cabinet and clean up
any spilt chemicals from the balance bench area.

Q8. How do you properly measure mass using an analytical

balance?

Ans. If the object you need to weigh is a solid object, you can
weigh it directly on the pan. Be sure the balance is zeroed. Open
the chamber doors, carefully place the object on the balance pan,
close the doors, and read the mass of your object.

Q9. What precautionary measures should we take in

calibration of analytical balance?

Ans.
1. Close lid before weighing.
2. Tare before weighing.
3. Note weigh accurately
4. Switch off after use.
Q10. Who generates current during operation of analytical
balance?

Ans. Load cell generates current.
