Tattoo removal

4 different wavelengths
o 1064 nm Nd:YAG for removal of DARK
PIGMENTS
o 532 nm KTP for RED, TAN, PURPLE and
ORANGE tattoo inks
o 650 nm KTP for GREEN tattoo inks
o 585 nm KTP for SKY BLUE inks

4 wavelenghts for complete colour pallet
Photoacoustic interaction of Q-switched
laser beam with pigment
Tattoo Removal
Mechanism (1)

● Working mechanism: Selective

Photothermolysis - Absorption of laser light by
tattoo pigment granules

● Photoacoustic (shock wave) effect is

breaking pigment-containing cells and pigment
granules into smaller particles

● White light flash occurs as the laser pulse

strikes the tattoo pigment (caused by the laser-
induced plasma or ink particles burning)

● Immediate whitening appears, caused by

rapid, micro-localized heating with steam or
gas formation

Name Surname, ver x.y., dd.mm.yyyy

Tattoo Removal
Mechanism (2)
● Temperatures exceeding 500 to 1000°C
develop locally, causing thermal damage to the
collagen in vicinity of the irradiated tattoo
pigment

● Within one microsecond, an optical shield

above the affected pigment area is formed,
preventing any subsequent laser pulses from
reaching the remaining deeper lying pigments.

● Fragmented ink and cells particles are

phagocytized by macrophages

● Immediate reduction in visible pigment occurs

in the first week after treatment, followed by
gradual fading over the next several weeks.

Name Surname, ver x.y., dd.mm.yyyy

Tattoo Removal
Mechanism (3)
● Only lasers with pulses in nanosecond
region (1-100 ns) are able to successfully
remove tattoos without significant skin
destruction

● The dermis and the epidermis sustain

mechanical injury from the photoacoustic
wave, but this trauma is highly repairable,
leaving no scars

● Skin textural changes generally resolve

within 4-6 weeks, suggesting an optimal
treatment interval of 6 weeks or longer.
Only after this interval it is effective to treat
the remaining tatoo pigments with a
subsequent laser pulse.

● Depending on the tattoo density and depth 1 Tx pigment reduction effect

3 -10 treatments may be needed.

FracTAT

o Eliminates the need to have two lasers systems to enhance tattoo

removal

o Improves tattoo removal efficiency by drilling micro holes in the

skin with fractional Q-s procedure (1st Step) before full-beam Q-s
tattoo treatment (2nd Step)
o This allows gas and steam to escape, eliminating the frosting
effect and allowing the tattoo to be treated again after just a few
minutes (in the same session).
