Introduction
This manual gives information specific to ACS800-14 frequency converter modules.
The document contains the information that differs from, or adds to, what is stated in
the related manuals listed below.
• Technical Guide No. 3: EMC Compliant Installation and Configuration for a Power
Drive System (3AFE61348280). Contains information for Original Equipment
Manufacturers of AC drive systems on how to ensure compliance with the
requirements of the EMC Directive.
Inquiries
Address any inquiries about the product to the local ABB representative, quoting the
type code and serial number of the unit. If the local ABB representative cannot be
contacted, address inquiries to ABB Oy, AC Drives, PO Box 184, 00381 Helsinki,
Finland.
ADBU Type of optical branching unit for fibre links that use the DDCS protocol.
AGPS Gate driver power supply board. An optional board within inverter modules
used to implement the Prevention of Unexpected Start function.
Frame (size) Relates to the construction type of the component in question. For
example, several drive types with different power ratings may have the
same basic construction, and this term is used in reference to all those
drive types.
With the ACS800-14, the frame size of the drive indicates the quantity and
frame size of the supply modules, plus the quantity and frame size of the
inverter modules, e.g. “2×R8i + 4×R8i”.
To determine the frame size of a drive type, see the ACS800-14 frame
sizes and power module types table on page 19.
Inverter unit An entity containing all inverter modules controlling a motor, together with
their control electronics, and I/O and auxiliary components.
PPCS Power Plate Communication System; a protocol used in the optical fibre
link that controls the output semiconductors of an inverter module.
RDCU Drive control unit. The RDCU is a separate unit consisting of an RMIO
board built in a plastic housing.
RMIO Motor control and I/O board. Contains the principal inputs and outputs of
the drive. The RMIO is contained within the RDCU drive control unit.

Parameter edits
If only the basic parameter edits are made the VSD will start with a single start input
applied to the INU control card only. Removal of this start signal trips the VSD and
opens the main contactor (or circuit breaker) every time.
To prevent the contactor tripping every time it is recommended to make the basic
and optional parameter / wiring modifications listed later.
Basic operation
INU 95.06 LCU Q Defines the reference value for Set to ‘zero’ to ensure
PW REF the line-side converter reactive the units operates at 1pu
power generation. Line-side powerfactor, i.e no
converter can generate reactive reactive compensation
power to the supply network.
INU 95.07 LCU DC Defines the intermediate circuit Set to ‘600’ when
REF DC voltage reference for the line- operating on a nominal
side converter. 400 V / 3 / 50 supply
INU 16.09 CTRL Defines the source of the control Set to ‘external’.
Board board power supply. This will now mask the
Supply PPCC link fault on the
INU card during
powerup of the system

Alternative operation
ISU 16.15 I/O Starts the converter by the level Set to ‘DI2 LEVEL’
START of digital input DI2. The converter
MODE starts to modulate and the
charging resistors will be
bypassed when the converter
RMIO board is powered, its
digital input DI2 is ON and there
are no faults.
Note the system must be powered down the up to store the above edits
Wiring modifications
The above change requires a start switch to be connected to DI2.
Parameter edits
15
Wiring Example
A single start signal can be used to start the system. The start is connected directly
into the ISU card (DI2) and is interlocked with the ‘main contactor closed’ signal. This
prevents the INU card from receiving a start input (DI1 or Di6) until the main
contactor is healthy and in circuit.
Alternatively a timer can be used to prevent the INU card receiving the start signal
too early.
Failure to prevent the INU from receiving the start input until after the ISU has started
and synchronised to the mains will simply mean the INU card will trip and require re-
setting before the output can be achieved.

I2N Continuous rms current. 10% overload is allowed for 1 minute every 5 minutes.

(400, 500 or 690 V).

I2hd Continuous rms current. 50% overload is allowed for 1 minute every 5 minutes.

Derating
The load capacity (current and power) decreases if the installation site altitude exceeds 1000 metres
(3281 ft), or if the ambient temperature exceeds 40 °C (104 °F).
Temperature derating
In the temperature range +40 °C (+104 °F) to +50 °C (+122 °F), the rated output current is decreased
by 1% for every additional 1 °C (1.8 °F). The output current is calculated by multiplying the current
given in the rating table by the derating factor.
Example If the ambient temperature is 50 °C (+122 °F), the derating factor is 100% - 1 % · 10 °C =
90% or 0.90. The output current is then 0.90 × I or 0.90 × I . °C
2N cont.max
Altitude derating
At altitudes from 1000 to 4000 m (3281 to 13123 ft) above sea level, the derating is 1% for every 100 m
(328 ft). For a more accurate derating, use the DriveSize PC tool. If the installation site is higher than
2000 m (6600 ft) above sea level, please contact your local ABB distributor or office for further
information.

Charging circuit
The capacitor banks of the power (ISU and INU) modules needs to be charged
during the start-up before connecting the drive to the three-phase line.
The control and wiring of the charging circuit is presented in the circuit diagrams in
the chapter Illustrations. The dimensions of the components are shown in the
ACS800-204 IGBT Supply Units as Modules; Hardware Manual.

Contactors are needed for the on-off control of the main AC input power. The
contactor is operated with a three-position switch (off/on/start) located on the cabinet
door.
For more information on the contactors, see the documents available from
http://www.abb.com. Feed the contactor type (e.g. AF210) into the search field.
The air circuit breaker is used for the on-off control of the drive main AC input power
in the high power units where the contactors are not applicable. Typically, the
breaker is operated with a three-position (On/Off/Start) switch located on the cabinet
door. The breaker can be used as the main disconnector (when pulled out). The
main features are:
• rated voltage: 690 VAC
• rated current: 1250…5000 A. See table above.
• rated breaking capacity under short circuit Icu: 75…100 kA. See table above.
• version: withdrawable (disconnects when pulled out)
• busbar orientation: rear horizontal busbars
• number of busbar poles: 3
• dimensions [mm]: H: 461, D:423.5, W: 432
• weight: 104 kg.
For more information on the breaker and the wagon for the breaker, see SACE
Emax Installation, service, and maintenance instructions for low voltage air circuit
breakers (ITSCB 601933/001 it-en 6-99). The document is available from

Note: The cooling fan(s) of the IGBT supply module(s) must be on when power is
applied since the supply unit must modulate when powered.
The fan on/off control is implemented by using relay output RO3 of the inverter unit’s
RDCU control unit (A41) to control additional contactors K20 and K21, which in turn
switch the cooling fans on and off. The following parameter changes must be made
for the on/off control to work:
• Set parameter 14.03 RELAY RO3 OUTPUT to “PARAM 14.18”.
• Set parameter 14.18 RO PTR3 to “+118.003.01”.
