Most of my friends speak several languages. My friend hans Kimmel, for example,
speaks three languages – German, French, and English. And my friend John
Pavlov speaks four languages – Russian, French, Spanish, and English. Then
there’s Charles Choh. His native language is Chinese, but he speaks three or four
other languages fluently. I don’t understand it. They speak, read, and write all
those languages, and I only know one language – English. Why is that? Why can’t
I speak any foreign languages? Am I too dumb to learn a foreign language?

Maybe it isa ll a question of home and environment. My parents don’t speak any
other languages, so of course we speak Englis at home. But look at Hans. His
fathers is German and his mother is French. So he speaks two Languages at
home. And look at John’s family. His father is Russian and his mother is Spanish.
So they speak two Languages at home.

Perhaps it is a question of geography too. I live in the United States, and I can
travel hundreds of miles with only one Language – English. But it is different for
Hans in travel to France, or to Italy, or to Holland, or to Denmark. So of course he
hears other languages all the time. And he needs other languages.

I’m studying Italian this term at the university, but I am not learning very much
Italian. I can’t practice it at home or in restaurants or in stores. I only speaks it three
hours each week – in the classroom. That’s all. The rest of the time I speak
English. Maybe I should go to Italy for a few months. Then perhaps I could really
learn Italian.

La mayoría de mis amigos hablan varios idiomas. Mi amigo Hans Kimmel, por
ejemplo, habla tres idiomas: alemán, francés e inglés. Y mi amigo John Pavlov
habla cuatro idiomas: ruso, francés, español e inglés. Luego está Charles Choh.
Su lengua materna es el chino, pero habla tres o cuatro idiomas con fluidez. No lo

or stores; He is thinking of traveling to Italy for a few months so that he can learn

El escritor no está aprendiendo mucho italiano. No puedo practicarlo en casa, ni

para así poder aprender Italiano. Según mi opinión debe viajar a Italia o
conseguirse un grupo de amigos italianos, con los cuales poder practicar el
idioma.
