COUNTABLE / UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

(=SUBSTANTIVE NUMARABILE / NENUMARABILE)

1. SUBSTANTIVELE NUMARABILE (COUNTABLE NOUNS) sunt cele care pot fi numarate. majoritatea
substantivelor in engleza sunt numarabile.

Ex: I have two dogs.

She has three cars.

He has ten dollars.

2. SUBSTANTIVELE NENUMARABILE (UNCOUNTABLA NOUNS) sunt cele care in engleza nu se pot numara.
Acest lucru are legatura cu felul il care vorbitorii nativi de limba engleza privesc aceste substantive : un
singur lucru mare care nu poate fi separat.

ATENTIE ! Nu se folosesc forme de plural cu substantivele nenumarabile. Chiar daca unele se termina in “-s”,
nu trebuie sa ne lasam pacaliti.

Ex: Mark drinks a lot of water. (=Mark bea multa apa)

She gives me great advice. (=Ea imi da sfaturi grozave)

There isn’t any cheese in the fridge. (=Nu este branza in frigider)

Paul likes politics. (=Lui Paul ii place politica.) – “politics” (=politica) este la singular desi se termina in “-s”

Exemple de substantive care sunt nenumarabile:

 Lichide si gaze : water, coffee, milk, air

 Substante solide sau granulare : wood, metal, cheese, sand, rice
 Cuvinte care se refera la forte sau energie: electricity, sunshine, heat, magnetism
 Materii : French, chemistry, matemathics
 Cuvinte care se refera la ceva grupat : fruit, money, food, vocabulary, news, furniture
 Lucruri abstracte : advice, information, education, intelligence

Pluralul substantivelor nenumarabile :

- A cup of coffee = o ceasca de cafea (NU a coffee)

- A loaf of bread = o paine (NU a bread)
- A bottle of water = o sticla de apa (NU a water)
- A bar of chocolate = o ciocolata (NU a chocolate)
- A piece of furniture = O piesa de mobilier (NU a furniture)
 - A piece of advice = un sfat (NU an advice)
- A piece of information = o informatie (NU an information)
