Background:
Probably anyone who has been in school has experienced the delight of learning, joyful
adventures with peers, and fun but challenging requirements in every subject, which helps in
the development and personal growth of each student. However, due to the concurring
pandemic, the normal and usual way of learning drastically changed in a matter of months
where students are now forced to study at home and cope with a new learning system,
which is remote learning.

Remote learning is defined as the use of technology to recreate the classroom

environment for the students to learn (Online vs Remote Learning, 2020). Online meetings,
recorded lectures, and learning guides (LGs) are used to create a virtual learning
environment. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and campuses were forced to shut
down for students to follow social distancing measures (Adnan & Anwar, 2020).
Governments and school institutions are launching various policy initiatives to use remote
learning, distance education, or online learning to prevent the spread of the virus (Ali, 2020).
The use of remote learning in schools is new to a lot of students and a traditional classroom
setup is still preferred as they are more used to it. With the ongoing health crisis, schools are
expected to use remote learning which means that the learning guides and online meetings
should still help students in learning effectively.

Although remote learning addresses the problem of distance and possible risks of
contracting COVID-19, the effectiveness of remote learning in the Philippine setting is still
yet to be established as this is the first time for most. According to Ray (2020), remote
learning consists of four elements in its structure, namely time, communication, technology,
and lesson design. If educational institutions fail to uphold one of the four elements, the
effectiveness of remote learning may be affected (Ray, 2020). However, access to
technology is still a problem for most.

In connection with this, remote learning is implemented in the community of Philippine

Science High School - Central Luzon Campus (PSHS-CLC) for the first time. As
PSHS-CLC’s Batch 2026 embarks on a new journey in PSHS-CLC, they are already faced
with the challenges of remote learning for the first time. Some of which may revolve around
the LGs from the administration.
