What is thinkBIM?

Digital worth more than £400m-a-day to UK economy


• The sector contributed £149
billion to the economy in 2018
and grew by 8% compared to
the previous year
• Up until the mid 2010s, the sector
had been growing in line with
the wider rate of UK economy
growth. But the official figures
show that in 2015 the digital
sector’s growth started to
outstrip the economy as a whole
and has continued on an
upward trajectory since

Challenges in using data across government


• The National Audit Office report
finds that there are three
substantive issues –
• Data is not always seen as a priority by
government
• The quality of data is not well
understood
• There is a culture of tolerating and
working around poor-quality data

Robot road marker


• The machine uses precise
positioning technology to mark
out where white lines need to be
painted on new or resurfaced
roads.
• It has already saved hundreds of
hours of working time on
Highways England projects
including Britain’s biggest road
upgrade, the £1.5bn A14
Cambridge to Huntingdon
improvement.

FieldPrinter
• This can print all information from
the BIM onto the floor, including
layouts for each trade and
details about wall types and
doors
• FieldPrinter also creates
continuous progress reports and
communicates field status back
to project teams in real-time so
they can respond to any issues

Open-source smart home standard


• Apple, Google and Amazon
have teamed up to develop an
open-source smart
home standard to make it easier
for manufacturers to create new
devices that work together
• The goal of the new project is to
ensure than any smart device a
consumer buys will work in their
home regardless of which
smartphone or voice assistant
their using

New IoT law will protect ‘millions of household devices’


• The plans from the Department for Digital,
Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), will
make sure all consumer smart devices sold
in the UK adhere to the three rigorous IoT
security requirements
• All consumer internet-connected device
passwords must be unique and not resettable to
any universal factory setting
• Manufacturers of consumer IoT devices must
provide a public point of contact so anyone
can report a vulnerability and it will be acted on
in a timely manner
• Manufacturers of consumer IoT devices must
explicitly state the minimum length of time for
which the device will receive security updates
at the point of sale, either in store or online

Social Distancing technology


• A new wearable system that
alerts workers if they move closer
than 2m to each other has been
launched
• The bracelet-style device from
Lincoln firm Tended is also
designed to enable ‘contact
tracing’, letting employers see if
workers reporting a Covid-19
diagnosis have been in contact
with colleagues, and for how
long

Water Industry Digital Platform


• As a result of the Better Together
weekly calls, British Water is
working with Arup to prototype
a digital platform to examine
challenges in the delivery of
resources and supplies
• This will help build resilience in
the supply community
• The platform will be designed in
collaboration with members so
that the needs of members and
the industry are met
