SGDI Roundtable Two

A Roadmap to Peace in Afghanistan
Zohra Abdullah
17 December 2020

Presenters: Mustafa Aryan (Executive Director, SGDI) and Zohra Abdullah (Researcher, SGDI)
Moderator: Kayla McGill (Deputy Executive Director, SGDI)

On Thursday, 10 December 11am CET, SGDI hosted their second roundtable at the UNESCO
Future Literacy Summit.

Mustafa Aryan started the presentation by giving an overview of the Afghan conflict. He
summarised the history of the conflict, going on to analyse past negotiations. He then
introduced the on-going negotiations and the salient issues surrounding them. Regional
geopolitics and its impact on the peace process were discussed.

Zohra Abdullah introduced the ongoing investigation at the International Criminal Court (ICC)
on the situation in Afghanistan, highlighting the legal repercussions of political impunity and the
role of the ICC in imparting post-conflict retributive justice. Political expediency was contrasted
with ending impunity as two approaches that were simultaneously being pursued in this conflict.

The event was concluded by answering some questions about the scope of international law, the
regional politics and the future of the peace process.
