STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Name : FULL NAME

Degree Sought : Master of Science
Major : Electrical Engineering

I feel it a unique privilege to give a brief account of myself to your esteemed institution. I am pursuing my
final year bachelor degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering at Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of
Engineering & Technology affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. My objective is to
achieve excellence in the field of VLSI. I strongly believe that graduate study involving high quality research
at Southern Illinois University in this field is a necessary step towards my goal.

My Educational Background and Academic Achievements:

My under graduate studies here was the most crucial for carving my ambitions in the right manner as in this
period I had become an active personality. It has given me a firm grounding in a number of Electronics and
Communication Engineering related subjects like Semiconductor Devices and Circuits, Analog and Digital
Communications, Switching Theory and Logic Designing, Antenna & Wave propagation, Optical
Communications and VLSI. The joy of learning these subjects under excellent professors is unsurpassable.

My inclination towards graduate studies gained foot during my third year of engineering, when I visited Bharat
Heavy Electricals Limited under such professors. During my visit, I came in intimate contact with researchers
and learnt a lot about the temperament and determination required for research. With this experience I could
build a small working project “Automatic Gate open Using IR beam” and it was selected as the best project
displayed on the road show conducted at my college.

For the final year I am doing a project on “32-bit Data Path Simulation” based on Quite United Circuit
Simulation (QUCS) software.

I enthusiastically participate in various technical fests and seminars. During my third year I was one of the
organizers in “Hands on Workshop on Digital Signal Processing (DIGICOM-08)” conducted for two
days in our college. During my final year I participated in robotics (ULTIMATE STALKER) competitions
held in our college. I organized the ‘PRAGNYA’ technical symposium and ‘PULSE’ cultural event in my
college. I was also an active participant in sports and games, won the 2 nd prize in inter college cricket
tournament.

Desire for Graduation in VLSI:

My thought process for graduate studies was not made in a day nor a month or a year but was backed by my
passion for Electrical Engineering all through my schooling and under graduate study. Right from my child
hood, I had a strong proclivity for understanding the working of electrical equipments such as my video games,
radio, television etc. I was fascinated by the small chips that can perform wonderful tasks; later on knowing a
little about it I was marveled at its capacity to accommodate millions of electronic components in it. This
continuous queries lead to a thirst for VLSI and as a result I have concentrated much in this field but my thirst
was not quenched even in my under graduate studies. I have realized that only a graduate study will serve the
purpose. An undergraduate course though comprehensive in its curriculum, provides limited scope for
specialization. Much of the integration of advanced technologies in any demanding field takes place in
graduate program. Only then one can fathom the depths of this demanding field.
Why Southern Illinois University?

Considering all the above reasons, when I started looking for a university to pursue my graduate program, I
found that Southern Illinois University and its professors were held in high esteem by my lecturers, seniors,
and peers in addition to the considerably good reviews on various websites. Also, when I visited your website I
was impressed by the highly qualified faculty, extensive infrastructure and the nature of research going on. It is
important that I do my graduate study in a stimulating and challenging academic environment such as that at
your graduate school. I wish to be considered for admission to the M.S. program in VLSI at the University. I
look forward to study and work in your esteemed institution and to do my best to make our relationship
challenging yet beneficial one.
