Secondary surveillance Radar
A cooperative independent system

>> Cooperative – It requires transponder on board


the aircraft.

>> Independent – (Except barometric altitude) It


requires ground unit that calculates distance and
azimuth.
In high density airspace, it suffers from

- RF congestion
- Code swaps
- Degradation of probability of detection
- Inability for vertical plane surveillance
Mode S
 S = Selective Addressing Interrogation of aircraft.
 Using a unique world wide ICAO 24-bit Address to
identification of the aircraft.
 (224 = 16 millions codes :16,777,214 )
Registration mark ( ID card no, phone number)
 allocated by ICAO to the State of Registry or common
mark registering authority.
