Factor Theorem

Factor Theorem
Identifying whether the Divisor is a factor
or not
❧ To identify if the divisor is a factor, the
remainder has to be zero. Otherwise,
the divisor is not a factor.
❧ You may either use SYNTHETIC
DIVISION or SUBSTITUTION to find out.

Identifying whether the Divisor is a factor
or not
❧ Example 1
𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 ! − 3𝑥 " − 5𝑥 + 6 ÷ (𝑥 − 1)
❧ Using Substitution:
𝑓 1 = 2(1)! −3 1 " − 5(1) + 6
𝑓 1 =0
∴ 𝑥 − 1 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑓 𝑥 .

Identifying whether the Divisor is a factor
or not
❧ Example 2
𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 ! − 3𝑥 " − 5𝑥 + 6 ÷ (𝑥 + 3)
❧ Using Substitution:
𝑓 −3 = 2(−3)! −3 −3 " − 5(−3) + 6
𝑓 −3 = −60
∴ 𝑥 + 3 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑎 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑓 𝑥 .
