o An inverse function, which is notated f−1(x), is defined as the inverse function of f(x) if it
consistently reverses the f(x) process.
o An inverse function is notated as f-1(x). An inverse function reverses the f(x) process and has the
usual characteristics of all other functions. That is one output for each input. We say f-1(x) is the
inverse function of f(x) if:
F(f-1(x)) = x
o We can however obtain the graph of f-1(x) on a set of axes by reflecting our original
function with the line y = x as our mirror line. However, it is imperative to note that not
all functions do have an inverse function.
o The process of combining functions so that the output of one function becomes the input
of another is known as a composition of functions. The resulting function is known as a
composite function. We represent this combination by the following notation:
(f∘g)(x)=f(g(x))
