Topic: The Positive Effects of Listening to Music while Studying
Matric number: 2020964231
Group: BA 240 3C

Studies have shown that music produces several positive effects on a human’s body
and brain. Music activates both the left and right brain at the same time, and the activation of
both hemispheres can maximize learning and improve memory. In the modern era of
technology, many students listen to music while studying. This trend raises a question on how
music affects one’s concentration and performance during the study. There is a popular term
coined ‘The Mozart effect’ which shows that listening to classical music such as Mozart help
increase intellectual quotient (IQ) in spatial reasoning.

There are numerous benefits by listening to music while studying for instance it is
proven to ease student stress as music is an efficient reducer of stress in both healthy people
and people with health issues. Research shows that listening to calming music can reduce
blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of anxiety. Furthermore, it helps to improve your
academic performance that can strengthen the emphasis on a task by offering inspiration and
mood-enhancing. Music can encourage stamina during long study sessions and some students
have found in some cases that music helps them with memorization. Apart from that music
also helps to reduce test anxiety. While learning, consider listening to rap music if students
suffer from anxiety and stress. A study conducted by the University of Cambridge found that
hip-hop music provides an uplifting influence that can help them embrace, handle, and cope
better with mental health problems. There is more than one kind of rap that gives the brain the
encouragement it needs. Besides, it will help you focus more, and has been shown that
listening to music increases levels of dopamine in the brain. It works as a motivating molecule
in the brain because it allows the brain to be productive with all the functions it requires for a
person to do. These tasks require areas that control your concentration so that you can remain
focused on the job. Lastly, it is proven to improve brain functions as one of the most convincing
explanations for listening to music during a study session is that music has been shown to help
enhance cognitive efficiency which typically allows the brain work to improve performance on
cognitive tasks in music.

The objectives of this study were:

i. To understand the effect of listening to music on the concentration and performance of a
student.
ii. To observe the effect of different types of music on the concentration and performance of a
student.
Introduction
Introduce topic Positive effects of listening to music while studying
Credibility This is a topic I am interested in because it occurs in my daily
life.
This idea is coming from my experience learning while listening
to music and wondering how far the effectiveness is.

Background of topic A research study done by the University of Windsor, Canada

to confirm the effect of listening to music reported its positive
effect on work performance.

There is a popular term coined ‘The Mozart effect’ which

shows that listening to classical music such as Mozart help
increase intellectual quotient (IQ) in spatial reasoning.

Central Idea This study reveals that music, memory, and emotions are
strongly linked. This evidence supports the theory that studying
while listening to music is a very beneficial practice.
This study involved 200 Malaysian students representing three major ethnicities. Among them,
120 students prefer to listen to music while studying and the remaining 80 were not.

Conclusion and Recommendation

Music could help the student to concentrate while studying

Conclusion
to the extent when they prefer to listen to music. This
positive finding is relevant to justify the current trend of
listening to music while studying as it does not pose any
adverse effects on the concentration of student. In fact, it
might also improve performance in their academics.
Similarly, individual preferences of particular types of music
seem to play a significant role in helping student to
concentrate.

Recommendation Including music into our daily lives will help each individual
to have a relaxed mind that will not just benefit in academics
but also in our day-to-day lives.
