A CITY OF FIRSTS
The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester boasts
25 Nobel Prize winners who broke new ground with world-
changing discoveries.

This resourceful city has witnessed radical historical moments including the
invention of the first programmable computer, the splitting of the atom and
the modern discovery of graphene, a super-thin, highly-conductive material
which has the potential to revolutionise many different sectors.

We have named the three buildings in Uptown to reflect this illustrious past.

ELEMENT
Element is a celebration of two exceptional pioneers – Ernest Rutherford, the
man who split the atom, and John Dalton, the meteorologist and atomic theorist
who is recognised as the father of modern chemistry.

ENIGMA
Enigma is named to acknowledge the work of Alan Turing, the inventor of the
programmable computer, who conducted his work at the University of Manchester.
His advancements in computing laid the foundations for the information age, and
his work during World War Two cracking the German Enigma Code was vital to
the Allied victory.

GRAPHENE
Graphene is named for the atom-thick, two-dimensional material at the heart
of a new manufacturing revolution which was discovered in Manchester by
Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov. Lightweight, incredibly strong and highly
conductive, graphene has the potential to transform technologies in every walk
of life, from solar power to flat-screen devices to disease detection, and beyond.
