APPENDIX
ENLARGEMENT AND CORRECTIONS
of
THE GEOGRAPHIC, STATISTICAL AND HISTORICAL DICTIONARY
OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS.

ABO
ABULUG: regarding this town that was mentioned in the place that
corresponds to it, it is necessary to verify the following additions. The waters of
which it is obtained come from a spring located at a short distance; are
crystalline and thin.* It is also supplied by a river that passes half an hour
away from the poblacion, known on the map under the name of Abulug, it is
quite large;  its origin comes from the mountains of Malaneg and Ilocos, and
goes to drain into the sea. The municipality of this town extends from north to
south and about 8 leg, to the West at four, the land is very fertile, but most are
uncultivated due to a shortage of arms. Bounded on the N. with the sea, and
by the S. with part of the jurisdiction of Pamplona, which is 3 hours away.

AGA
AGAÑA: in the corresponding article for this city, mention is made of some fruit
trees, such as the coconut and the rima; there is also another one known by
the name of dúgdug which fruit is called Federico: there are also some whose
timbers are used for construction, being the main and more consistent which
come from the Ifir. To the Western part of the island, and at 3 leguas distance
from the city, is located the port of San Luis de Apra, immediately to the town
of Agat and in its district. It is divided in two anchorages, interior and exterior:
the first, although small, is safe in all times of the year, even in the strongest
storms; but to enter it is necessary to mark the direction of the ship by a good
pilot. Its position is between a large reef that leaves towards the Northern part,
and an opposite islet, called of Santa Cruz. The outer does not give so much
security to the ships in hard times, by the many lowlands that surround it. In
the mentioned islet there is an armed castle with six pieces of heavy
artillery. In the year 1880, a house of commerce and factory was established,
with the corresponding authorization of the supreme government, in the
mentioned port of Apra and beach of Súmay. Population: 6,519 persons.

AGA
AGAT: visita: as it appears in article which corresponds to it, has been erected
in a town under the invocation of Santa Rosa de Lima; it is situated on level
and fertile land, near the beach, on the western coast of the island. To its
environs and by the N.O. of the poblacion, runs the river Fogoña or Allúha, or
Ayúha with direction N.E. Its collaterals the city of Agaña by the S. the town of
Umáta to 3 leg. of distance, of difficult road and exposed in time of rains by
four inclined slopes and several dangerous rivers. There is a good bay, but

2
discovered to the winds O. and S. The church is served by a regular priest with
presentation of the vice-patron. Popl. 300 persons.

AGNO: to the one in the corresponding place, it is added and broadened with
the following notes. Founded on the banks of the river of its name in a small
plain, surrounded by little mountains, the river is the greatest wealth of this
town because of the circumstance of being navigable for minor boats, to the
distance of 3 leg. inland, and to offer them safe haven from the winds, although
they are exposed in times of rain, as a consequence of the great currents: the
bar or entrance is dangerous to one who has no practice, because there is a
stone base in its center, and another one of sand to the Northern part. Near the
poblacion there is an excellent quarry of berroqueña stone. In 1851, the town
was composed of 2,353 persons, and 624 tributes.

AUG
AGO: after the article was written and printed in the dictionary, this town has
been added to the province of La Union has since increased its population to
804 persons, and 181 tributes.

AGU
AGUILAR: in the mountains of this town exists a gold mine, to exploit. It is
necessary to rectify the number of persons, and the tributes it satisfies: the
former are 3,556, and the latter, 1,016.

ALC
ALCALÁ: the pastor of souls and administration of this town belongs to the
mission of Dominicans Friars; its foundation dates from the year of 1844, in
whose time it counted 697 persons, and at present they are 1,043, however of
what it expresses in its article the dictionary.

ALI
ALIAGA: in the details that of this town occurred in the corresponding place of
the Dictionary, it was said that it was served by a secular priest; at present its
administration is in charge of a regular priest of the order of Augustinian
shoed, to which it corresponds. The exact number of their persons is 4,166,
and that of their tributes is 1,010.

ALIMODIAN: instead of the number of persons and tributes which appears in

the Dictionary with reference to this town, it must read as follows: 7,114
persons, 1,805 tributes.

AMB
AMBLANG: to the details given in the corresponding place, it is necessary to
add that this town is distant on the Southern part, 1 league of its annex
Oyuquitan, and not Ayuguitan. The natives, disinclined to work, do not use

3
as they should the fertile land they inhabit, nor exploit it of what they could,
because they are accustomed to sustain themselves with the heart of the palm
Buli, or buri, which abounds extraordinarily, and benefit from the different
ways they serve as bread, they abandon the cultivation of their lands. However,
they harvest enough harvests of rice, maize, sweet cane, abaca and cacao. Its
industry consists in the elaboration of the bayones and coarse bags, of the leaf
of the said buri. They are also engaged in fishing. They use the woods of their
forests, and they have the necessary ones for the construction of their
buildings: those mainly consist of tindalo, ipil, molave and others. At a distance
of 7 leagues, walking towards the mountain, there is a lake of two leagues in
circumference, whose bottom has not been found with a sounding of 200 long
rods.

ANG
ANGAT: the statistics in the Dictionary article are not accurate; we have to
make the following rectification. Population: 10,220 persons, 2,391 tributes.

ANI
ANIGNI or ANINIY, because of the two ways it is written and we designate him
with the last one in its opportune place: forms the civil and ecclesiastical
jurisdiction with the town of Cagayancillo, in the island of its name, its
administration belongs to the Shoed Agustinian Friars, consisting of 2,471
persons, and 506 tributes.

ANT
ANTIQUE: The census of population and number of tributes of this town are
the following: 7,061 persons, 1,667 tributes.

of Shoed Augustinian Friars, and its population is shown next: 6,433 persons,
933 tributes.

APA
APALIT: the census of its population and tributes is as it is here expressed:
8,623 persons, 2,026 tributes.

APARRI: the land of this town is flat without any tree; nevertheless, on the
bank of the river, and about half an hour from the distance, nipas and palms
in abundance are beginning to appear, which form forests in marshy lands, for
Which of them is used only that the wine is extracted from the nipples, and the
application of the palms to the roof of the houses; it extends this territory from
north to south from the sea to the town of Camalaniugan ½ of a league: from
east to west from the municipality of Bugay up of Abalug 3½: bounded on the
north by the sea, Sud with Camalaniugan, which is 1 ½ league, east of Bagay,
4, and West with Abulug 3 1/2. When the waters are lacking in this town, the

4
crops are lacking, for their land is absolutely dry, and although it is true that
the palay is sown, this operation is verified in times of rain. Although they
wanted to use the waters of the Rio Grande, the one that is called the Linas
and the other two streams that run close to the town, they would not be of any
benefit, but would be of serious damage to them, since these waters contain
large amounts of brackish water, so much so that if by force of the hurricanes
or bagyos these waters are introduced into some fields planted with rice, they
dry and kill them as has happened several times since 1848. The drinking
water, which has precisely to be supplied for the uses of life, also contains
brackish particles, and it is certainly not healthy for those who are not
accustomed to it. Its census of population and tributes are the following, and
not as it appears in its place: 8,938 persons, 1,191 tributes.

BACON: we expanded the data that appear in this articulation with respect to
this town. The mountains and woods near the town, although it is certain that
they are already somewhat scarce of wood, however; provide the dwellers with
the necessary facilities for their buildings. At a distance of ½ league of the
town, runs a stream that gives him drinking water. It has as collateral to
Dumaguete, its old mother, in the North, and Dauin in the South.

pastures and different kinds of trees that are found in its populated forests,
such as: yacál, banaba, mangachpuy, camagon and ebony. In the area that lies
between this town and the visit of Dasol, there is a mine that, according to the
acknowledgments practiced in it, appears to be copper. All the neighborhoods
of the town are composed of a quarry of stone similar to the berroqueña, very
white and very fine grain. Its collateral is Santa Cruz, by the South, at a
distance of seven leagues; Agno by the West 6, and Sápspsap by the N 1 ½. Its
