Subject: Implementation of “Apprenticeship / Internship embedded Degree Programme” – regarding.

Respected Sir/ Madam,

As you are aware the Hon'ble Union Education Minister addressed the concluding session at the ‘Conclave
on Transformational Reforms in Higher Education under National Education Policy’ on 7th August 2020 at
New Delhi through video conference. On the occasion, the Minister virtually launched UGC Guidelines
(copy enclosed) for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to offer “Apprenticeship/Internship embedded
Degree Programme”. He stated that the employment generation coupled with improving employability of
the youth is the priority concern of the Government and was reflected in the NEP-2020.

As per the said UGC guidelines, any UG degree programme in all disciplines as specified by the UGC under
section 22 (3) of the UGC Act, 1956 is eligible to embed apprenticeship/internship of atleast one semester
into the degree programme. An apprenticeship/internship embedded degree programme shall be treated at
par with the UG degree programmes specified by the UGC under section 22 (3) of the UGC Act, 1956.
Embedding apprenticeship/internship will offer a kind of a traineeship which shall be undertaken not on the
campus but at the premises of the workplace like commercial or non-commercial organizations or
enterprises, or offices, or industry, or industry associations to get work-based learning in identified
discipline/trade. The total credits assigned to a particular degree programme shall continue to follow the
Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Accordingly, a student will have to earn 132 credits for the award of
undergraduate degree. Credits for apprenticeship/internship training may be suitably accommodated in the
CBCS by the HEI. At least 20% of the total Credits for the degree programme should be assigned to
apprenticeship/internship.
