DIRECT SPEECH & INDIRECT SPEECH

WHEN WE USE THE DIRECT SPEECH WE’RE HAVING WHEN WE’RE USING THE INDIRECT
A DIALOG. WE’RE SAYING SOMETHING. OR REPORTED SPEECH WE’ ARE TALKING ABOUT
SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED IN THE PAST.

SIMPLE ASPECT

A: “My parents are well.” She said that her parents were well.
A: “Jim has bought a new car.” She said that Jim had bought a new car.
B: “I want to go on a holiday, but I don’t know where.” He said he wanted to go on a holiday, but he didn’t know
where to go.
B: “I can’t come to your party on Friday.” He said he couldn’t come to your party on Friday.
C: “I’m going to give up my job.” She said she was going to give up her job.
C: “I’ll call you when he gets back.” She said she would call you when he got back.
D: “I woke up feeling ill and I stayed in bed.” He said he had woken up feeling ill and had stayed in bed.
He said he woke up feeling ill and stayed in bed.

PROGRESSIVE ASPECT

A: “Don’t speak, Tom is sleeping. ” He told him not to speak because Tom was sleeping.
A : “I have been waiting for you for one hour.” He said he had been waiting for you for one hour.
B: “I was preparing fish when he came in.” She said she had been preparing fish when he came.
She said she was preparing fish when he came.
B: “This time tomorrow I’ll be flying.” He said he would be flying that time next day.
