Lesson Plan Outline

Teacher: Jennica Quenville Class & Grade: Kindergarten

Date & Time: Monday Nov. 23rd 9:35-10:10 Topic/Subject(s): Math

Learning Intentions “I can use 2D shapes to create an object”


“I can identify the 2D shapes in my object”

Lesson Overview The students will be read a story called “Mouse Shapes” by Ellen Stoll
Walsh, which is a fun little story where mice end up creating different
objects (Ex. houses, books, cats, fish), out of combining different 2D
shapes. As we read the story we will review the shapes that they have
learned. After the story, students will take part in creating their own
creations out of 2D shapes. When they are finished I will take pictures of
their creations and I will assess them on whether they can identify the
2D shapes in the object (The ones that they have learned - they may use
a couple shapes that they haven’t learned about yet)

Curriculum connections Big idea: Objects have attributes that can be described measured and
compared.
Core competencies: Communication & creative thinking
Curriculum competencies:

● Use mathematical language and vocabulary to contribute to
mathematical discussions
● Represent mathematical ideas in concrete, pictorial, and
symbolic forms.
Content: Single attributes of 2D Shapes and 3D solids.

Alright, so you know how you have been shape detectives
and you have had to find different shapes in the
classroom? Do you know that everything in the world is
made up of different shapes?! It’s true! So I am going to
play a story that is going to help us explore this idea more.

Plays mouse shapes*

T: Leads students through a recap of some of the objects the


mouse made with the shapes.

Lesson T: “This book reminded me that all things in this world are made Pattern blocks
up of different shapes! Like _____ is made up of a ___ and a Phone to take a picture
___!”

T: “So, this morning I thought it would be neat to give each of


you your own blocks and then see what images you can create
out of them. It might be an animal, it might be a type of car, it
could be anything that is in the world! Then when you’re
finished your creation I will take pictures of them so that we can
remember the wonderful creations that you made!”

T: The only thing is you can’t use the same shape. Try to use as
many shapes as possible and make sure that you creation has a
lot of detail.

T: once you’re finished your creation, put up your hand and I
will come take a picture of it and ask you to identify the shapes
in your object and then

t: Once you’ve finished and I have checked your work, then you
can play around with the blocks some more and create whatever
images you want or could could use the popsicle sticks to
practice creating the different shapes

T: I’ll be playing some soft music while you are working and we
will need to keep the volume at a level 2, if it’s too noisy that I
can’t hear the music then we will have to quiet down.

**Remind them I’m looking for Rockstars - I’ve created a


management technique where each day near the end of the day,
before their long centers time, I announce a “Rockstar of the
day.” The Rockstar is someone that has behaved really well
throughout the day and put in a lot of effort. They get a sticker
and then they get to be the first one to choose what center they
play at (because this is a big deal to these kindies)**
Closure Give students prior warning on how much time they have left.
Popsicle sticks
Check students work/assess

Students can continue to play with their pattern blocks or create


shapes out of popsicle sticks when they are finished.

Assessment: I will write down the image the students have created and I will make a note on
their ability to identify the shapes in their image.
