Ever since I could remember I have always wanted to play a big part in children’s education.

As
I was growing up I could see children of my age in Nepal struggling to go to school because of
their circumstances. It’s always been my goal in life to become an early year’s teacher and see
children achieve their ambitions. Helping them to achieve what they want in life is a big
ambition of mine.

Introducing myself, I am Ashika Gurung, daughter of Ash Bahadur Gurung and Shir Maya
Gurung residing permanemtly in Dandagaun-12, Syangja, Nepal. My father is an Ex-Indian army
currently working in abroad as a security officer. Despite being an average kid in my early days,
I grew up being the most hardworking student. I completed my school leaving certificate (S.L.C)
from New millennium Academy securing 84.75%. Later on, I completed the proficiency
certificate level (PCL) in dental science (Dental Hygiene) from Kantipur Institute of health
sciences as a college topper with an aggregate score of 86.95% in a merit scholarship. As soon as
I became Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) of Nepal and got my license on May 24, 2019, I
got a job in Buddha Dental care and have been working there since June 3. I instantly pursued
my aim of becoming Dental Hygienist after grade 10.

As a student in PCL level, I got the opportunity to attend various placements. Among them, I
really enjoyed my work placement at Primary health care center (PHCC) , Kristi Nepal because
it helped me to extend my theoretical and practical knowledge of the communities. It was the
most fascinating and interesting experience, I totally enjoyed working with people and trying to
solve their medical problems. This made me realise that becoming an early year’s teacher was
what I always wanted to do.

Beside the academic qualification, I was involved in extra-curricular activities and sports too. I
was also a volleyball player and has received second medal in girl’s volleyball in fourth CAD
(cluster for academic development) sports meet defeating many schools from Kaski district,
Nepal. Moreover, I actively participated in free health camps organized by several renowned
organizations such as Lions International Club, Leo Club and Rotary Club of Pokhara, Nepal.
Serving the community people gave me immense happiness and satisfaction. During health
camps to rural areas, I visited several schools and I found myself being full of joy and pleasure
surrounded with children’s. At the same time, I was sad to visualize that Children were unaware
of basic learning of healthy lifestyle. Teaching every youngster about the ways of maintaining
healthy lifestyle and eading them to a good path became my ultimate goal to cherish.

Working at Buddha Dental Care as a Dental Hygienist has helped me to learn to work in a busy
environment. Working with people from different backgrounds, working as a team member, and
communicating effectively with dental patients and other members of staff has been a learning
curve. Having to teach new crew members have given me more responsibility.
I consider myself as a hardworking and self-motivated individual who enjoys facing challenges
and finding a professional way to deal with them. I feel that my good communication skills are
very essential when working as a team especially when children are involved. In my leisure time
when am not studying I enjoy socializing, travelling, listening music and babysitting my cousins.

My future plans are to complete the course successfully and equip myself with relevant skills to
start a rewarding career. I intend to come back to my home country to deliver the gained
knowledge and skills in the right place that is to shape and nurture the young minds of the future
mainly in the remote areas. I will also support Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) who primarily
stands for the child development to enhance growth and stability. Moreover, I would also like to
pursue a career as an early year’s teacher. The degree will allow me to gain the skills and
experience I need to work with children. Lastly, I would like to thank you for taking your
precious time to look over my statement of purpose and I have hope you will review it positively.
