Teacher Professional Growth Plan

Teacher: Kelsey Shoults

Position: Grade ½ Teacher Intern
School: Glendale Elementary School
Date: November 17, 2019
Year: 2019

Competencies to be developed (Goal 1): My first goal is to develop strong classroom

management skills by building routines and procedures, while also fostering a positive learning
environment.

Teaching Quality Standards: Engaging in career long learning

Strategies (Resources):
 I will learn and apply classroom management strategies from my PS1 classes.
 I will observe strategies used by my PS1 teacher associates, my PS1 teachers and discuss
these strategies with my other PS1 classmates to help expand my knowledge of
classroom management strategies and techniques.
 I will keep an ongoing list of strategies that I observe throughout my PS1.
 I will seek advice from my teacher associate, university consultant, as well as my other
ps1 teachers to discuss which strategies they find work the best.
 I will try a new strategy in the classroom every week and reflect on the effectiveness of
that strategy.
 I will seek feedback from my teacher associate and university consultant about the
effectiveness of the management strategy used.

Timeline: Achieve by December 12, 2019.

Expected Results/Indicators of Success:

 I will receive positive feedback from my teacher associates and university consultant.
 My students will listen to and respect me as their teacher.
 I will feel confident in my ability to choose effective classroom management techniques.

Reflections:
For my goal in developing strong classroom management skills I was continuously discussing
different techniques my teacher associates used. When we discusses the strategies I would aim to
implement them in the day after we discussed them. For example I used the “silent” technique
while waiting for students as well as by getting their attention and having their conversations
come to a close by saying “If you can hear me touch your ...”. Throughout the semester I saw
value in praising appropriate behaviour rather than bringing attention to the negative behaviours.
I was able to see the body position can truly help us especially when students may be struggling
to focus. Going forward I would like to try a tally technique with the classroom or with students
that can allow them to work toward an event or “reward” as a class.
Competencies to be developed (Goal 2): My second goal is to develop and maintain positive
and meaningful relationships with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues by building
healthy relationships that are built on mutual trust, respect, and effective communication.

Teaching Quality Standard: Fostering effective relationships

Strategies (Resources):
 I will incorporate my students interests into their lesson and be there to support them as
needed.
 I will attend parent teacher interviews to meet my students parents and begin to build that
relationship with them.
 I will observe at least two other teachers within the school to learn new ideas from their
teaching practice.
 I will look for opportunities to become involved in whole school program activities.

Timeline: Achieve by December 12, 2019

Expected Results/Indicators of Success:

 I will strengthen the relationships with me and my students so they feel they have
someone who is there to support them.
 I will develop and learn effective teaching practices from teachers within the school.
 I will develop professional relationships with the teachers and principals within my
school.
 I will have participated in one or more activities outside of my regular classroom
assignment.

Reflection:

My goal was to develop and maintain positive and meaningful relationships which I was able to
work toward for the duration of this practicum. I was able to observe in other classrooms to
continue to build relationships with others in the school including other students and teachers. I
was able to observe in the grade five and six classrooms and in the grade four classes as well. On
Fridays we also participated in school events which included all students from different grades
being mixed up. We completed team building activities to help promote relationships between all
students and other teachers other than the students normal teacher. I had a positive experience at
parent teacher interviews and was able to have positive interactions with them discussing their
children. Going forward I want to continue to learn how to interact with parents especially when
students may be struggling with certain topics. I was able to incorporate my students interests
into my lessons, however this is something I want to continue to be better at going forward.
