The year 2020 has been a painful
year for many of us in many ways. It
has been a year of fear, loss, and
sadness of an unprecedented scale. As we
step into 2021, the world around us is hop-
ing for respite, hoping for a better day.
There are posts and articles on a bright fu-
ture to come, on putting behind 2020 and
basking in the glory of the new year. There
is a sense of confidence that life is going to
get better, that 2020 was the worst of it.
But let our hopes not be based on blind be-
liefs and in social media soothsayers. Let it
be based on the living word of God. In Num-
bers 9:17-19 we read, “Whenever the cloud
lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set
out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israel-
ites encamped. At the Lord’s command the
Israelites set out, and at his command they
encamped. As long as the cloud stayed
over the tabernacle, they remained in camp.
When the cloud remained over the taber-
nacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the
Lord’s order and did not set out.” At the
Lord’s command the Israelites set out and
at his command they encamped. Their
journey was punctuated by obedience.

Similarly, at the start of this year, let us

begin by asking ourselves as individuals
