SCRIPT

TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN

SHORT FILM
BY QUINN JAMES
SHORT FILM PRE-PRODUCTION BOOKLET 8

Characters:
Sam: has been made redundant and lost their home
Andre: IT technician whose business is thriving through the pandemic

TITLE CARD: “Two Sides of the Same Coin”

Calm music
DUN
Shot of Sam sitting on a bench looking bored, looks at their watch. Picks up
half eaten sandwich and sighs.
Takes a drink of coffee- focus in on this
They open their phone out of boredom, gets jolted up by the newspaper
headlines of jobs closing. Sam’s emotions changes from boredom to worry and
concern.
Headlines pop up around Sam’s head- wide shot to display what they are
reading.
Starts freaking out and picks up sandwich in a hurry and walks off

Cut to Andre
Andre wakes up in his bed calmly and walks down the stairs, he opens the
conservatory doors to let air in and watches the news for a bit. He then eats
breakfast, of a full English breakfast on a plate at a big table. Pan around
so the camera is behind his head, goes out of focus to show news, then in
focus and pans around to face- stays there for emotion.
He shrugs and carries on eating his breakfast, knowing it will not affect him.
Same headlines are around Andre; however, they are smaller.
Slightly wider shot for headlines then zooms in for match cut

Match cut of face and pans out

Sam is holding paper which explains their redundancy
Shot of redundancy paper, then back to Sam.
Wide shot of Sam outside old workplace, (camera on other side – Subway and
WHSmith)
They slowly walk away, putting the paper in their pocket.
Sam walks around Gerrards Cross.
SHORT FILM PRE-PRODUCTION BOOKLET 9

Sam looks into the windows of shops, window shopping (displays they cannot
buy anything with disposable income)
Heidi and Hudson, Boutique (opposite post office)

Sam looks at their own clothes then looks up to the shop, compares their
clothes.
Sam sits on the bench and looks around, sees other people with coffee. Sam
gets up and walks to coffee shop. They stand outside looking at their
wallet. Close up of wallet with barely any money. They also grab their
stomach, out of hunger but they cannot buy food.

Andre then walks upstairs to the computer and starts browsing online shops
and then looks at LACOSTE and Ralph Lauren and browses the new clothes
selection. He then buys something which is unnecessary.
Andre works with two computers working, going through excel spread sheets
and emails. Talking on Zoom calls.

Sam tries to look for a job by going to shops and seeing if there are job
offers outside, however there are none. Sam checks their phone to see if
anyone is employing. However, there is nothing.
Sam walks to a bench and sits down. Sam looks sad and has given up. They
are disappointed. They lie down on the bench as it becomes night-time. They
are hungry and cannot do anything.

Andre closes his laptop and goes downstairs. He turns on the TV and watches
Netflix. He plays a game on his phone as the movie is playing.
He then gets tired and walks up to bed.

Shot of Sam sleeping on a bench.

(Deterioration, struggling to buy food, decline of money)
