Second Term English Exam Duration :02h00

False advertising is any form of advertising that is misleading to the customer. The consumer
feels that buying the product would result in them benefiting from the purchase. The advertising might
be on television, radio, newspapers, magazines, billboards or the internet. They might advertise that
consumers could save money or that the product would perform a certain function.
There are many types of false advertising. The most ordinary kind is when a business raises
the price of an item and then lowers it and claims that it is on sale. They give consumers the impression
that they are really saving money.
Other companies might claim that customers will get a rebate back on their purchase. However,
they do not tell the consumer that the price is after rebate; therefore, customers are paying the full price.
In addition, businesses are not known for getting rebates back to customers very quickly.

A/ Comprehension (8pts)
Read the text and do the activities below.
A striking new image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope delivers a deep look into a mysterious
cosmic object called the Red Rectangle Nebula.
The Red Rectangle, so named because of its bizarre shape and striking color, is a nebula — a cosmic
cloud of gas and particles. In this case, the nebula is formed by the central star, HD 44179, which is reaching
the end of its life and shedding most of its mass into space.
The source of the red light emitted by the Red Rectangle baffled scientists for more than 30 years. The
same kind of red emission was seen throughout the Milky Way and in other galaxies, but scientists weren't
sure what created it. The mystery was finally solved in 2007: The glow comes from strange activity at the
molecular level inside clusters of dust.
This new image gives scientists the best understanding yet of the structure of the Red Rectangle,
according to a statement from NASA. Instead of a rectangle, it appears that the nebula around the star is
shaped like an "X," with ladder-like rungs of glowing gas connecting the four arms.
The star at the center of the Red Rectangle is similar to Earth's sun and is responsible for those evenly
youtube : english with bilal
spaced lines as it releases gas and other material to create the nebula and its distinctive shape. NASA experts
now believe the star is also a close binary (meaning it has a connected partner), and is surrounded by a dense
area of dust, according to the statement.

International Space Station (ISS), where it will be calibrated before rocketing into mission.
At the space station, Diwata will be housed in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM)
nicknamed “Kibo,” and by the end of April, the JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (J-
SSOD) will release Diwata-1 into space at an altitude of 400 kilometers from the Earth's
surface. Diwata-1 will be in orbit for about 18 to 20 months. The microsatellite has four
specialized cameras for imaging weather patterns, agricultural productivity, and land and water
resources. Diwata-1 is expected to be in orbit for approximately 20 months, taking images
twice daily. And while country's first microsatellite is still in orbit, its sister Diwata-2 will be
launched late 2017 or early 2018.
Diwata is a flagship project of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) meant
not just to place the Philippines in the map of space innovation, but also to reap its
contributions to agricultural productivity, food security, and even tourism. “The satellite will
also aid the rest of the country in terms of agriculture and tourism, with the satellite giving data
that will help farmers decide what crops to plant and where, while also capturing the country’s
natural wonders.". Now that satellite data and imageries will be more accessible, this satellite
youtube
technology will also boost : english
the capability withAtmospheric,
of the Philippine bilal Geophysical, and
Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to make accurate forecasts and weather
monitoring.

English Exam Third Term
Topic 1
PART ONE: READING AND INTERPRETING (15)

A/ Comprehension : (8pts)
An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. The Moon blocks
the light of the Sun and a shadow of the Moon is cast on the Earth's surface.
During a solar eclipse, the Moon actually casts two shadows towards Earth. One shadow is called
the umbra which becomes smaller as it reaches the Earth. The second shadow is called
the penumbra which becomes larger as it reaches the Earth. A total solar eclipse, or a complete blocking
out of the Sun's light, can only be seen from the area on the Earth's surface that enters the
Moon's umbra. People viewing the eclipse from the area of the Earth's surface that enters the penumbra
will see only a partial blocking of the Sun.
A total solar eclipse can only occur when two events happen at the same time. The first event is a new
youtube : english with bilal
Moon. This phase of the Moon occurs when the Sun is almost directly behind the Moon, and we see
only a sliver of the Sun's light reflected by the Moon. During this time the Moon and the Sun appear
close together. The second event that must occur is that the Moon must be in the right position, directly
in the line of sight between the Earth and the Sun. These two events occur at the same time about once
every year and a half.
In a solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the earth and the Sun. When this happens, part of the
Sun's light is blocked. The sky slowly gets dark and the stars appear. Birds and animals are quiet,
thinking night has arrived. When the Moon and Sun are in a perfect line, it is called a total eclipse.
These are very rare. Most people only see one in their lifetime.

A fatty compound called cholesterol is one of the main substances involved in the formation of
plaque. Cholesterol is found in many foods, including egg yolks, butter, and red meat. Eating both
cholesterol and saturated fats seems to increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Most
scientists recommend eating a diet low in overall fat, with cholesterol and saturated fats eaten
most sparingly of all. They think that limiting the amount of fat eaten, especially saturated fat
may also help people avoid certain types of cancer.
Eating a high-fat diet can contribute to excess consumption of calories, which can lead to
obesity. Obesity is overweight severe enough to pose a medical risk. People with obesity have an
youtube : english with bilal
increased likelihood of many health problems, including diabetes, coronary artery disease, and a
liver disorder called cirrhosis. In the United States, all processed foods must carry a label that
states the amount of total cholesterol and saturated fat in a serving. This information is
provided to help people control the amount of fat and calories in their diets.
People are advised not to let advertising influence the choice of the kind of food they want to
eat. Many experts consider TV watching and TV advertisements a cause of overweight. They make
people consume without thinking of their energy balance.

Astronomy is the science that deals with the origin, evolution, composition, distance and motion of

s
all bodies and scattered matter in the universe. It includes astrophysics, which discusses the physical
properties and structure of all cosmic matter.

m
Until the invention of the telescope and the discovery of the law of motion and gravity in the 17th
century, astronomy was primarily concerned with noting and predicting the position of the sun, moon and

xa
planets, initially for calendar and astrological purposes and later for navigational applications and scientific
interest.
During the 20th century, astronomy has expanded to include astrophysics, the application of physical

/e
and chemical knowledge to an understanding of the nature of celestial objects and the physical processes that
control their formation, evolution and emission of radiation.

m
Its great advances notwithstanding, astronomy is still subject to a major constraint, it is inherently an
observational rather than an experimental science. All measurements must be performed at great distances
from the objects of interest, with no control over such quantities as their temperature pressure or chemical
composition.
co
1. Are the following statements true or false? Write T or F next to the letter corresponding to the
n.
statement.
youtube : english with bilal
a. The definition of astronomy is given in paragraph 1.
io

b. In the 17th century, astrophysics became a part of astronomy.
