Interiors vocabulary notes

VOCAB:
1. Monochromatic: Refers to a color scheme that is composed of variations of one
color
2. Analogous: Any colors that are adjacent or next to one another on a color wheel.
3. ADA: Americans with Disabilities Act. It ensures access to building environments for
people with disabilities.
4. Complimentary: Two colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel
5. EBD: Evidence-Based Design. The process of basing decisions about the built environment
on credible research
6. Focal Point: The area in the composition to which the viewer's eye is naturally drawn.
7. ASID: The American Society of Interior Designers. An organization that promotes the
profession of interior design.
8. IIDA: International Interior Design Association.
9. Commercial Design: Design in commercial spaces. These include offices, retail stores,
restaurants, lobbies and other public spaces.
10. Residential Design: The design of private residences, in other words, homes.
11. NCIDQ: National Council for Interior Design Qualification which organize an exam
developed and administered by the CIDQ: Council of Interior Design Qualification who
certify interior designer’s title.
12. BIM: Building Information Modeling. It is a digital representation of physical and functional
characteristics of a structure.
13. Mood Board: Visual collections of ideas, full of textures and images that communicate the
vision of a designer.
14. ASTM: American Society for Testing and Materials, is an organization that develops and
publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of materials, products,
systems, and services.
15. Elevation: an orthographic projection of the exterior or interior faces of a building. Can also
be applied to an orthographic projection of the faces of an object.
16. Floor plan: It is a measured drawing to scale of the layout of a floor.
17. Sick Building Syndrome: Situations in which building occupants experience acute health
and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building.
18. Ornament: It is a Decoration used to embellish parts of a building or object
19. Figure-Ground: It is a visual relationship between foreground and background. It can also
be described as the contrast between positive space and negative space.
20. Sustainability: seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by
efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space and the
ecosystem at large. It uses a conscious approach to energy and ecological conservation in the
design of the built environment.
21. Color theory: The collection of rules and guidelines regarding the use of color in art and
design. The visual effects of how colors mix, match or contrast with each other. It also
involves the messages colors communicate.
22. Section: Shows the view of a building or object's structure in a way that it looks like it had
been cut and sliced in half along an imaginary plane.
