Subject/Grade: Grade 5 Science Lesson/Date: March 13th, 2020 Time: 10: 55- 11:30 am

Room: Gym
Stage 1: Desired Results
GLEs: Students will:
5–5 Demonstrate safe methods for the study of magnetism and electricity, identify
methods for measurement and control, and apply techniques for evaluating magnetic
and electrical properties of materials.
SLEs: Students will:
N/A  Unit Introduction
Learning Students will:
Objectives 1) Recognize how static electricity is formed.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Formative Exit slips Summative N/A
Assessment Assessment

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior to Resources  Written teacher notes
Lesson:  Diagram an atom to Bring:  Gym materials

Time: Content/Description Notes/Assessments:

Introduction: Review how electricity is created
<5 mins. - Ask the students if they remember what particles make up Pre-Assessment
an atom.
- Ask the students if they remember what kind of charge
each particle has?
- Look to written teacher notes for explanation of static
electricity:
o Matter (has mass an takes up space), atoms,
tightly bonded electrons, loosely bonded
electrons, friction (heat), negatively charged
balloon
- Explain to the students that we are going down to the gym
to do an activity that will showcase that some materials
have atoms with more tightly bonded electrons than others
(materials with lots of static ability and ones that don’t)

Body #1: Static Electricity Relay

- Bring the students to the gym ask them to bring a pencil
with them.
- Explain the relay game:
 Students names will be drawn from a hat to
determine teams.
 Each member of the team will rub the balloon on
their body and attempt to stick the balloon to
themselves.
15 mins.
 Once the balloon is stuck, then they will move
through the obstacle course
 Explain the obstacle course in detail
Subject/Grade: Grade 5 Science Lesson/Date: March 13th, 2020 Time: 10: 55- 11:30 am
Room: Gym
 IF THE STUDETN’S BALLOON DROPS, THEN
THEY NEED TO STOP AND STICK THE
BALLOON ON THEIR BODIES AGAIN
BEFORE THEY CAN CONTINUE
 Explain that once students get to the ball toss, they
have one opportunity to score a bucket
 If their score is successful THE TEAM FREEZES
FOR 15 SECONDS before they can continue
(time it)
 One team member goes at a time
 A team has won, once every group member has
successfully passed the course.
 Emphasize that any student who plays unfairly
will be asked to start over.

Closure: Exit Slip

10 mins.  Ask students to help clean up the relay
 Have a discussion about the relay: Formative
o Where on your body did you stick the Assessment
balloon?
o Why did you choose that spot?
o Did you need to find a different spot to place
the balloon?
o How long did your balloon stay attached?
Why do you think that is?
 Hand out exit slip
 Take back to classroom and dismiss.

Stage 4: Reflection
1. How the students responded to the lesson as planned and taught:
2. Specific strengths of the lesson plan and delivery:
3. Specific weaknesses in the lesson plan and delivery:
4. What must be addressed to improve this plan?
5. How I have grown from this teaching experience:
