Table 1: Table shows the results of titration.

Calculation

Let VA be the volume of sample solution titrated, VB be the volume of thiosulphate consumed,
MB is the molarity of the thiosulphate and M A is the molarity of the oxygen in the water. Then
from titration equation given above 4 moles of thiosulphate titrate 1 mole of oxygen. Hence:

V A × M A =V B ×(V B × M B /4 ). Thus : M A=(V B × M B)/(4 × V A )

Tap Water

M A =( 4.0× 0.01)/(4 × 50)

M A =2.00× 10−4 mol

Pond Water

M A =(2.9 ×0.01)/(4 ×50)

M A =1.45× 10−4 mol

The concentration of oxygen can now be calculated in µg/1 from the molarity.

C (µg /l)=M A × MW (O2 )× 106

Tap Water
C (µg /l)=(2.00 ×10−4 )× 32× 106

C (µg /l)=6400 µg /l

Pond Water

C (µg /l)=(1.45 ×10−4 )× 32×10 6

C (µg /l)=4640 µg /l
