o Shinto – "The way of kami"

o A Japanese religion.

o Considered animistic and pantheistic.

o An optimistic faith.

o Originated in prehistoric times.

o Remains connected with the Japanese people’s


ways of thinking and acting.

o Does not have a founder or sacred scriptures.


o KAMI – Shinto Gods

o Shinto Gods - Are sacred


spirits which take the form of
things and concepts important to
life, such as wind, rain,
mountains, trees, rivers and
fertility.

o The Sun Goddess Amaterasu - the


most important kami.

o Kojiki or
"Records of Ancient
Matters"

o Nihon-gi or
"Chronicles of
Japan"
o Shinto shrines - The
Place of worship
and the homes of kami.

PRIVATE AND PUBLIC


WORSHIP

o A person can worship at a


shrine or in their home.
They pray to a particular
kami either to obtain
something, or to thank
the kami for something
good that has happened.
SUBDIVISIONS
State Shinto - incorporated into the
national ideology during the Meiji period starting in
1868.

Sect Shinto - started in the 19th Century and includes 13


major independent sects which are recognised by the
Japanese governement.

Folk Shinto - it has no formal organizational structure


nor doctrinal formulation but is centred in the veneration
of small roadside images.
BELIEFS
o “man is kami’s child”

o There is no absolute right


and wrong.

o Nobody is perfect.

o Humans are thought


to be fundamentally
good, and evil is believed
to be caused by evil spirits.
