GENERAL PLUMBING SYMBOLS

NAME SYMBOL DESCRIPTION

used to join pipe sections or tube sections on the same
ECCENTRIC REDUCER axis. The concentric reducer is cone-shaped, and is used
when there is a shift in diameter between pipes.

Direction of movement of water flow and impurities.

DIRECTION OF FLOW

a pipe fitting through which liquid is passed for purification,

STRAINER any device functioning as a sieve or filter used to prevent
solid bodies from mixing in a liquid stream or flowline
usually liquid- or gas-tight, cover the otherwise open end of
CAPPED OUTLET a pipe. A cap attaches to the exterior of a pipe, and may
have a solvent-weld socket end or a female-threaded
interior.
Downward slope of a drain pipe in the direction of the
DIRECTION OF PIPE PITCH water flow
(DOWN)

is commonly used in water-supply facilities, food, chemical

TOP CONNECTION, 45° and electronic industrial pipeline. The center connection is
OR 90° generally to the pipe leading to a trap

is a long major pipe, typically underground, for conveying

MAJOR PIPELINE ______ fluid or gas over long distances.

Used to connect other pipes on side.

SIDE CONNECTION

is used to connect the equipment in the same horizontal

MAJOR STRAIGHT LINE or vertical position.

a metal or plastic supply line that connects a faucet or

RISE OR DROP IN PIPE shower fixture to the water supply stop valve.

connects two pipes, but is quite different than a coupling,

UNION as it allows future disconnection of the pipes for
maintenance.

INVERTED BUCKET TRAP the bucket within the trap is attached to a lever that opens
SET INCLUDING PIPING and closes the trap valve in response to

FLOAT & THERMOSTATIC A valve with a ball float actuator drains condensate when
TRAP SET INCLUDING the liquid reaches a predetermined level in the trap.

for heating & cooling systems,

into a pipe fitting or into a manifold.

a device inserted into the flowing fluid that produces a

a spigot that protrudes from the exterior of a building
HOSE BIB with plumbing, allowing those who garden or work in the
yard to attach a hose and use water while outside.

PLUMBING valve SYMBOLS

NAME SYMBOL DESCRIPTION
GATE VALVE designed for fully open or fully closed service. They are
installed in pipelines as isolating valves, and should not
be used as control or regulating valves.
GLOBE VALVE are widely used in plant piping. They are suitable for manual
and automatic operation. can be used for regulating flow or
pressures as well as complete shutoff of flow.
CHECK VALVE generally installed in pipelines to prevent backflow.
Basically, a one-way valve, in which the flow can run freely
one way
ANGLE GLOBE VALVE manually operated valve with its outlet opening oriented at
right angles to its inlet opening; used for regulating the flow
of a fluid in a pipe. a valve for controlling the flow of a liquid
or air; the fluid leaves at right angles to the direction in
which it enters the valve.
BUTTERFLY VALVE a quarter-turn rotational motion valve, that is used to stop,
regulate, and start flow. A butterfly valve has a disc which is
mounted on a rotating shaft. When the butterfly valve is
fully closed, the disk completely blocks the line.
BALL VALVE The ball valve body design is conventional and flow is
controlled by the position of a hole through the ball. This
type of valve is used to control flow, pressure control in gas
distribution systems and pressure reduction in connection
with gas storage.
MODULATING CONTROL an automated control valve that can be fully open or fully
VALVE closed, not just on/off. A modulating valve is a combination
of a modulating actuator and a valve.
TWO POSITION two-position directional valve has two positions, and is
CONTROL VALVE always in one of two states. With a simple two-
positon, two port valve (symbol shown at right) -
the valve will either be open or closed.
THREE-WAY 3-way control valve is to shut off water flow in one pipe
MODULATING CONTROL while opening fluid flow in another pipe.
VALVE
THREE-WAY TWO They are commonly used to alternately apply pressure to
POSITION CONTROL and exhaust pressure from a valve actuator or a single-
VALVE acting cylinder.
PRESSURE REGULATING valve simply uses spring pressure against a diaphragm to
VALVE open the valve
AUTOMATIC FLOW regulates the flow or pressure of a fluid. Flow Control
CONTROL VALVE valves normally respond to signals generated by
independent devices such as flow meters or temperature
gauges
PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE are designed to open at a preset pressure and discharge
fluid until pressure drops to acceptable levels
MANUAL AIR VENT a safety device that discharges air at the water supply
piping in order to avoid air related problems in the water
piping systems.
TEST PLUG used to stop pipes and to carry out low pressure testing on
many types of pipes, and often this testing is mandatory.
AUTOMATIC AIR VENT designed to remove the air that accumulates in heating
and air conditioning systems without the need for manual
intervention.

PLUMBING piping SYMPBOLS

NAME SYMBOL DESCRIPTION

DOMESTIC COLD Piping that brings water from the main supply lines into a
WATER, COLD WATER building regardless if the structure is residential or
commercial in nature is referred to as domestic cold
water piping.
DOMESTIC HOT means at least 50 to 55 °C in the tank. At simultaneous need
WATER, HOT WATER of heating and domestic hot water heating there is a good
reason to reflect in what way the domestic hot water shall
be heated.

DOMESTIC HOW hot water recirculating system, there is a dedicated return

WATER RETURN, HOT line for the hot water pipes, which runs from the furthest
WATER RETURN bathroom or fixture back to the water heater.

DRAIN carry waste out of your home to either the city sewer or a
septic tank.

SANITARY SEWER a system of underground pipes that carries sewage from

bathrooms, sinks, kitchens, and other plumbing components
to a wastewater treatment plant where it is filtered, treated
and discharged.
STORM WATER Stormwater is the water draining off a site from the rain that
falls on the roof

GAS LINE The piping inside the house is called the gas supply line or
building line

COMPRESSED AIR The purpose of the compressed air piping system is to

deliver compressed air to the points of usage.
The compressed air needs to be delivered with enough
volume, appropriate quality, and pressure to properly power
the components that use the compressed air.
FIRE LINE Fire fighting pipe is a type of normal carbon steel pipe used
to convey fire suppression agent such as water or gas.
