Not the Zetec we know and love, but a
smaller one, although this time, all-alloy
and also known as the Sigma. This has more
in common with the Duratec, which it
resembles quite closely, plus it also closely
apes aToyota 4-Age but in alloy, and it
famously had input fromYamaha, too.
Available in versions from 1.2 to 1.7 litres, its
most famous role was when fitted in the
Racing Puma where it was equipped with
variable valve timing and a power figure of
154 bhp. Now this one really would be
daring but it’s small and light and can easily
be tuned to beyond 200 bhp.The well-
balanced, rev-happy crank sits up inside the
block like a Duratec. Plus, it demonstrates
uncharacteristic amounts of torque. Parts
are still widely available.
I4 RS2000
Originally designed as an eight-valve twin-cam engine for the late Sierras and
Sapphires, the 16-valve variants were found in the Mk5/Mk6 RS2000 and late Scorpios.
The I4 has chain-driven cams, a cast-iron block and an alloy head with hydraulic
tappets. It’s a pretty robust unit where every component is built nice and chunky - the
cams look like they’re on steroids, while the flywheel is a whopping, heavy component.
There is little available in the way of performance parts apart from complete induction
swaps on RS2000 engines to the likes of throttle bodies and twin DCOEs. Good gains
can be made but the engine is harder to tune. There’s an eight-valve version, too (found
in late Sierras and Granadas) but only go for this if you’re looking for a cruiser
ZETEC
There are two series of Zetec — the SilverTop and the BlackTop
(left), while the cooking ST170 is based on the latter. The Silver
Top is known as the Mondeo engine, while the BlackTop’s the
Focus engine, and both produce big power with an induction
change. You can get up to 150 bhp with the standard breathing
components and around 170 with carbs/injection. 200 bhp is
hard without headwork and larger-size followers, which are
needed for longer duration cams. Zetecs will mate to any
Ford-pattern gearbox, so they’re easy to turn round but you will
need a water rail conversion, correct-rotation water pump and
ideally, a rack-and-pinion equipped car.

notoriously weak. Beyond that and valve sizes are
generally increased to around 36.8 mm for engines in
excess of 270 bhp. This size plus a touch of porting is
generally regarded as sufficient to see 300-315 bhp.
Cams are by mechanical operation and tolerances are
extremely high with differences taken up with cam bucket
variations. As such, there are no key-ways; the chain-driven
cam pulleys rely on torque settings and friction to hold
them in place.
Since these engines are more emissions-friendly, they
feature low duration and high lift — 257 degrees inlet, with
9.87 mm lift and 252 degrees exhaust with 8.45 mm lift.
These are enough for a tad over 200 bhp.
Several tuners again have their ranges of cams — SBD’s
and Kent Cams’ examples are similar although the former
tends to be slightly more conservative on duration, the
effect being that dynamic compression is increased rather
than opening for longer and therefore letting more charge
in.The net result will be an increase in torque effectively
giving you more guts and punch.
A set of SBD CM-DUR01 cams will give you around 215
bhp, coupled with their exhaust and induction, which
we’ve detailed over the page. Beyond that, the same
company recommend their CM-DUR02 for results of
250-260, while coupled with a CNC-ported head with 36
mm valves, you should see up to 275 bhp. Levels beyond
need those larger valves again, coupled with CM-DUR03 or
equivalent for peak power over the 300 bhp.
Induction
Again the Ford emphasis here is on emissions so there’s a
big window for improvement — merely by swapping to
throttle bodies, you should see power in the region of
170 bhp — it isn’t common to go to carbs although
Mountune have produced a few for hot rod orientation
featuring managed ignition.
These engines are obviously meant for full engine
management and therefore feature the standard Ford
system of 36-1 crank trigger, although it is fitted into the
front pulley system rather than built into the flywheel as
in the Zetec.
There are various configurations of throttle body with
varying results — a non-tapered system on a standard
engine’s likely to see the aforementioned figure, while
SBD have reported gains to 208 bhp with their tapered
system, which effectively speeds up the gas flow
allowing compact bodies to be fitted in a restricted space.
Cosworth also makes a system of roller barrel throttle

The front brackets are placed at a height to suit the ride
height and overall wheel diameter, with the multiple
location holes allowing rear steer of the axle, going from
toeing-in under roll, or toeing-out.Toeing-in on the loaded
wheel makes oversteer less of an issue — it’s like the
advantage of modern multi-link rear independent
suspension, though of course, in Ben’s case it will be
toeing-out for sideways action.
The multiple positions also let the owner set up the car
for anti-squat — this allows more power to be put down by
using the links as levers to lift the whole chassis under the
torque reaction of the axle.
The Low Roll Centre Watts linkage gets the rear roll
centre closer to the front axle’s roll centre. The front roll
centre can be near theTarmac on low cars — or even below
theTarmac! A Group 4-style Watts linkage has the rear roll
centre fixed at the centre of the axle, half-wheel diameter,
which is around 11-12 inches (13 to 15 inch wheels have an
overall diameter of 20-25 inches).
The Cortina goes on the ramp ready for its rear end surgery.

This difference between front and rear roll centres gives
what’s called Roll Skew, and shows up in the three-

wheel-drive cars. What’s not so noticeable is that it lightens
the load on the rear tyre into the corner (as seen more
easily in a front-wheel-drive car lifting the inside rear wheel
into a corner). By bringing the roll centres closer together,
the skew is lessened, the car corners flatter, and better

geometry is maintained throughout the corner.
Link brackets are welded on to the Atlas axle.
There’s nothing new in this technology, it’s just not seen
on the more-common competition versions of old Fords
— the classic Escort rally car. But if you looked under the
back of Alan Mann’s infamous EscortTwin Cams you would
see a horizontalWatts link under the diff housing, which was

So said racing hero Roy Salvadori,
and it’s a sentiment that’s resonated across
the ages. The historic motor circuit
The story of Keith Harding’s race car really is transcended its functional roots as an RAF
like a fairytale. A lifelong passion for Capris base to become one of the most celebrated
racetracks in the post-war period; it closed in
has led him to build a race car, and its 1966, but the spirit of that mid-20th
Century era has been vividly rekindled by the
thunderous success and wonderful Goodwood Revival and, more recently, the
Members Meeting. And it’s here among the
popularity are a dream come true… verdant foliage of West Sussex that we find
Ford enthusiast and fledgling racer Keith
Harding today, standing proudly beside his
Words Daniel Bevis Photos Adrian Brannan sparkling Capri race car.
It’s the perfect machine for him, as he’s been
a fan of the model since back when they were
new in the showrooms. “I got my first Capri in
the 1980s, and I’ve always had them since,” he
explains. “I’ve got four of them at the moment,
and I always wanted to build myself a Mk1 Capri
race car.”
The eagle-eyed will have spotted, of course,
that the blue vision gleaming before Ade’s
camera today is a Mk3; a full-fat X-Pack brute
with a rumbling V6, no less. So how did this
happen? “Well, I saw it advertised for sale and it
seemed like the ideal car for me to get some
track practice in,” he reasons. “I’ve been racing
for a year and a half or so now, competing in the
Blue Oval Saloon Series (BOSS) series; there are
some pretty hairy cars on the grid, and I’m really
there to make up the numbers.” Keith is being
hugely modest here, as his early efforts in circuit
racing have yielded some genuinely impressive
results. In his first season he came third in the
CTCRC’s all-Ford championship, and his
second season saw him finish fourth overall.
Given the extraordinary nature of some of the
BOSS entrants, this really is impressive stuff.
Shakedown
However, this is far more than a tale of a Capri
fan buying a turn-key race car and throwing in
some numbers. The Mk3 required rather a lot
of work to get it up to snuff before Keith could
get out there and compete. “I completed
1000 miles on the road in it first of all, just to
give it a proper shakedown,” he says. “It was
obvious that the previous owners had chucked a
lot of money at it, although the parts weren’t
necessarily what I’d want on a track, so I threw a
lot of it out!”
Interestingly, the Capri had previously been
owned by the son of revered BMW race engine
builder, Lester Owen, acting as a sort of
apprenticeship project. The work involved is
clearly top-notch, including the various
bespoke aluminium tanks under the bonnet
and so on, and what’s most notable is the
furious Cosworth 24-valve V6. This is a full-fat
Lester Owen build, enlarged to 3.1-litres and
running mighty throttle bodies in a gorgeous
bespoke enclosure. “Aside from servicing the
engine, I haven’t had to touch it,” Keith
assures us. “It just purrs, it’s very reliable —
and pretty devastating on the track!”

MOTORSPORT
CLASSIC FORDS FLAT-OUT ON THE STAGE, STRIP AND TRACK
Keith will hopefully be back out racing later this year So there was little to do under the bonnet, but
— his Capri towed to the racetracks by a Mk1 Transit! Keith was keen to make a number of
improvements throughout the chassis. He
started by wholly replacing the suspension,
swapping in an adjustable GAZ set-up and a
Capri 2.8i anti-roll bar with anti-dive kit. And
most importantly, he needed to get the car up to
FIA specs in order to be allowed to race. For this,
a full, approved rollcage had to be welded in, as
well as a proper fire-suppression system to the
appropriate code, battery cut-off and all the right
bits. The focus of the car was clear right from the
start; while Keith is well-versed in the minutiae of
the racers at Goodwood’s Members Meeting
(he’s performed bodywork on various Capris
that race in the Gerry Marshall Trophy), he knew
that his own Mk3 wouldn’t be eligible for races
like that as it’s too far deviated from stock — the
wrong V6, the presence of rear discs, and so on.
But this actually provided a lot of freedom:
knowing that the BOSS series offered a much
freer and easier approach to modifications, Keith
was able to build the car into the best possible
version of itself.

THE BLUE OVAL SALOON SERIES
Keith races his Capri in the BOSS series.
Run by the ClassicTouring Car Racing Club
(CTCRC), BOSS stands for Blue Oval Saloon
Series, and it’s a championship whose regs
ensure impressive diversity: entrants must
use a steel production shell, and an engine
either manufactured by Ford or another
company copying the original Ford design
(for example, a Millington Diamond instead
of a Pinto). Gearbox casings have to be
Ford’s own, although entrants can make
changes to the internals. There’s also free
rein on suspension springs and brakes.
This means that there’s a lot of different

BAY WATCH
Ace Ford Motorsport mechanic, the late Norman Masters lowers a freshly-
prepared 2-litre BDG engine into the engine bay of one of Roger Clark’s new
Escort RS1800s (possibly POO 505R) at the Boreham workshops during the 1977
season. While the mechanics at Boreham worked across all the cars, Clark insisted
that Norman was only allowed to build up his cars. The car next to it, STW 130R,
was being prepared for Bjorn Waldegard and Claes Billstam to compete in the
1000 Lakes Rally where they finished third overall.
